What do you think made The Revenant a box office hit?

Compared to his other work such as Birdman, Biutiful and Babel which did not do so well at the box offices but were successful critically. What made this more successful than his other work? Please post your opinions and keep it peaceful.

Leonardo DiCaprio.

Because it is a masterpiece.

reply

Yes, and No, A cinematict masterpiece, but the tale too over the top, when it didn't have to be.

I think the story was iconic honestly because it was not too overcomplicated and pretty simple, allowing the characters to flourish. It was a tale about revenge and love, I do agree that it was exaggerated at points. Do you think some of the action scenes took away from the artistic side of the film?

reply

I think the cinematography made the film. also because it was seen as Leonardo's shot to an Oscar because the director won an Oscar the year before

reply

^THIS^, Leo. He was complimented with the other two reasons; Tom Hardy and the bear.

In every way Alejandro G. Iñárritu hit the nail on the head with this movie. I haven't seen Biutiful or Babel so cannot comment on them. I've seen Birdman and am not surprised that it wasn't much of a hit. Birdman is too surreal for most audiences. I think the first reason Revenant is successful is that Iñárritu surrounded himself with the best talent. Revenant is just maybe the most gorgeous-looking movie I've ever seen and I've seen tons. The acting choices are excellent, the story is easy to follow and interesting. The visual effects are flabbergasting. And Iñárritu contributes his part with incredible directing.

The overall story was very unique in the times of superhero and Disney films.

I thought it shat the bed. The words pretentious, self indulgent and overbearing and overblown come to mind.

On the other hand I am willing to concede that maybe I just didn't get it and it is an excellent movie.

reply

Honestly, I don't get it. But now that you mention Birdman, that put me to sleep too. So he is the In Director and he got the biggest actor on the planet. So a combo of Leonardo and the in director.

And I still don't get it.

Leonardo keeps making these incredibly long and over indulgent movies. oh well.
