Something I found rather depressing

Not to overlook the deaths of people, etc., but ...

I couldn't help thinking what it must have been like to live in one's clothes for weeks or months at a time. Then they would get completely, freezingly wet and the clothes were supposed to dry out.

I kept wondering how bodily functions were carried out, what if you got sick, bugs, how sturdy your shoes were and if they wore out, did they ever get a bath or wear something normal.

Thoughts, anyone?

I thought about the dirty clothing and lack of hygiene too, especially when Leo had the open sores. I just wanted him to have a hot bath and a good shampoo so bad!

Yes, I wonder how people "shampooed" in those days. I have lately read an article by a woman who said she no longer uses anything on her hair except water and it took a couple of months but now her hair smells clean and stays clean just washing it with water. Maybe that's what people did in those days. Hence, a fresh stream or lake would serve fine, I'm guessing. ?:)

It sucked. Living in those types of conditions is not healthy or enjoyable.

The people we saw were living on some of the fringes of human survival though, for those times. They were out in the dangerous wilderness and for most of the movie they were constantly on the run with no supplies or time to relax and take care of themselves. During the previous parts of the trip they would have had more time to build fires and dry off and take care of wounds.

I thought about how stinky they must be. In the summer they'd probably go in the water, if they cared, but too cold in the winter. Of course, you stink less in the winter, I guess.
