"Let's split up and look for him (Fitzgerald)....."

I really like this film, but seriously, did anyone NOT think the Captain was going to die after this obligatory line was said by Glass? I think it happened within two minutes of him saying this.

Something bad almost always seems to happen to at least one person when someone goes with the "let's split up" idea.

Yes, as soon as they split up I knew that the Captain was going to die. This guy must have never watched any movies. The director may have just as well put him in a red shirt and sent him on a landing party. It was a sophomoric action for such an ambitious film.

Agree, it was pretty lazy and lame. "Let's split up" is what you see in crappy teenage horror flicks where everyone knows someone is going to be killed soon after because of it.

reply

Add to that obvious plot manipulation the fact that the Capt had just done the equivalent of showing Glass a photo of his wife, which as we all know in war movies, is the clearest indication the director is going to kill that guy.

Very well put. So true. I had forgotten about the Capt showing Glass a picture of his wife and kind of opening himself up. His "amount of time left on earth" clock was ticking down the minute Glass met back up with him.

Hell it was obvious his was going to die from the moment he started talking about his wife. I seriously LOL'd at that point. Guy talking about his gf/wife/sweetheart back home before he bites it is one of the oldest cliches in the book.

reply

I thought he was gonna die the moment the two went after Fitzgerald together because obviously the showdown needed to be between Glass and Fitzgerald, so it seemed logical the other dude had to die.

I agree with scyza - the plot of the movie was pretty much filled with Hollywood cliches - the standard revenge plot made it obvious that the caption would have to die to get out of the way of the typical "final showdown"

The "I fear I'll never see my wife again" was just more of the formula.
