A black girl tried out the glass slipper? And then a very old lady. Also, all women wanted to try the glass slipper; why be so insolent and waste the King's time if you are not the owner of it?
This part of the fairy tale even annoyed me as a child, but at least it had the "benefit" of being a cartoon.
In at least one written version of the story, the slipper does actually fit an Old Crone, who obviously isn't the girl from the Ball. The Prince does not end up marrying the Old Crone, and he does find the actual Girl.
Since the prince knew that the girl he was looking for was young and white, it was a waste of time to try the slipper on women who did not fit that basic description.
The people sent to find the girl had orders to try every girl and the Prince never gave them any descriptions. He either wasn't there or was but didn't want to reveal himself like when the Grand Duke tried to leave the chateau without allowing Ella a chance.
lots of people hope to marry royalty, and all those ladies were hoping the slipper would fit them. in real life, of course, it would probably have fitted a number of them, but then in real life nobody would choose this odd way of finding a missing girl.

I assume it was done for a laugh. I laughed.

In the cartoon, the king proclaimed that the prince would marry the girl whose foot fits the slipper. He didn't say the prince would marry the girl from the ball. The Grand Duke even points out that the slipper may fit any number of girls. The king doesn't care. He wants grandchildren. As long as the slipper belongs to a girl with a working uterus, that's all that matters to the king. He tells the Grand Duke that the slipper possibly fitting several girls is the prince's issue.
In this, trying the slipper on every maid in the kingdom makes zero sense. He doesn't know her name but Kit knows what Ella looks like. After only a five minute (or less) conversation when she's in rags, he recognizes her all dolled up at the ball. He would certainly recognize her again. So why go around with the shoe? Just go door to door demanding that all women present themselves to the king.

Fairy Godmother cast a spell over her which prevented her stepmother and stepsisters to recognize her but remember that her Fairy Godmother is a bit...you know...'sloppy' and she isn't the best when it comes to magic. The magic she cast on Ella had a flaw which also made people forget her.

Do you mean every girl whose foot fits the slipper has been subjected to medical exams to check their uterus? What'd happen if Kit married a sterile girl? Henry VIII all over again?
