It was a 45 rpm Recording of the Beatles " Something" that his Aunt got for him on his birthday the night she was killed in the car crash.

This scene is executed so touchingly—and intelligently. I like that we don’t know the message Charlie writes to Sam. Because we don’t need to know—it’s a private moment for them, and them only. We know Charlie well enough at this point to know he’s a deeply thoughtful person, and the fact Sam reads the message and holds the record against her chest is all we need to see for it to be affecting. The fact too we learn the record was originally a gift from Charlie’s favorite aunt reinforces how special it is. Just knowing that it is Something by The Beatles—one of the most beautiful tracks ever recorded—is enough to bring tears to my eyes.

I agree completely with your final sentiment. It was also the best song that wasn't heard in the film.
