I liked the movie, but didnt like how it glorified rape so much *spoils*

That whole subplot where the guy repeatedly had hookups where the victim was way too drunk to remember what happened, and the guy constantly hounding the victim psychologically till they thought they actually liked the predator and the drunken hookups. It was sad that the victim was so ashamed of the relationship with the rapist, the victim couldn't tell anyone what was going on.

Then when the victim finally breaks it off, the movie plays it all up that we are supposed to feel sorry for the rapist, and how he is actually a victim/heartbroken, blah blah blah. Left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The 'guy' you're talkinag about is named PAtrick, and the 'victim' is named Brad. Just for future reference, try to use their names; it's less confusing that way.

And the point of that subplot was nothing to do with rape. Patrick didn't 'get Brad drunk to hook up'. The point was that Brad was raised in such a homophobic enviornment that he was only able to admit his homosexuality to himself and others when he was under the infulence of alcohol. Patrick didn't get him drunk; he drank willingly to loosen himself up and calm himself down enough so as to come to terms with his sexuality.

I suppose it could sound a little rape-y, but it's really not. Brad was only able to shamelessly love Patrick when he was drunk, but then he used the alcohol as an excuse to say 'I don't remember and you can't hold me accountable for what I did.'

And if tou remember, eventually, Brad was comfortable enough with Patrick that he didn't need to get drunk to love him anymore.

yea...that's still rape. It doesn't matter whether Brad "willingly" drank or "used the alcohol as an excuse", the facts are 1) getting Brad drunk was Patrick's plan since he brought the alcohol and the meetings were his idea, 2)Brad was only able to 'love Patrick shamelessly' while drunk 3)consent cannot be given while intoxicated. It may have helped him 'come to terms with his sexuality', but he was still doing things that he initially felt uncomfortable with sober. Even if Brad was comfortable enough with Patrick that he didn't need alcohol, the amount of manipulative coercion required from Patrick to get to there is kind of sickening. If Brad couldn't admit his sexuality without alcohol, Patrick should have left him alone.

Thats not rape

Thank you. Seriously you boys need to take health class again. That wasn't rape.

reply

It is rape though, by law. Are you female, by any chance?

Hehe I'll bite anyway just because I want to type something.

When he (Brad) stopped getting drunk he continued to hook up with him (Patrick).

Hehe moreover, Brad was the dominant, alpha male! He was the pitcher, and Patrick was clearly the beta, limp-wristed, fruity ¨oh look at me I'm gay and want to make sure the world knows¨queer type - CLEARLY Patrick was the catcher.

Thus, while technically it'd be possible to rape him by getting him aroused, and then manually putting it up the poop shoot tail pipe and grinding to and fro.

So I conclude there was no rape. Perhaps taking advantage of him to get that dick up his arse... But no rape, or sexual assault or any sort. Just two willing, queer participants.

reply

No, in the book it clearly says Brad was in the "bottom" position. You're being stupidly naive when it comes to gay people. Personality does NOT indicate what sexual positions people like. And to be fair, most gay people switch it up all the time.

reply

He got him drunk to have sex with him. That is rape, by law.

That is only true when the victim is female. Males are not victims of rape.

You're an idiot.

One's personality has nothing to do with whether they're a top or a bottom.

Ya, as a female here, have to absolutely and unequivocally agree that this was NOT a rape scenario, and Patrick is hardly a rapist. I can't believe anyone could watch this film or read the book and think that was the case! I mean, seriously!

As someone else pointed out, Brad continued to see Patrick after Patrick helped him get off booze. Does anyone think if Patrick had repeatedly raped Brad, that Brad first of all wouldn't know that, and second of all, would have continued to see him, over and over?

Brad clearly used booze to overcome his own shame and inhibitions. It allowed him to allow himself to be sexual with a guy. I don't think it says anywhere that he ACTUALLY got blackout drunk - he only CLAIMED he was too drunk to remember anything, which is very clearly a ploy by a closeted guy waking up the next day feeling shame and looking for any excuse so he doesn't have to accept responsibility for his own behavior, desires, and sexuality. The very fact that he kept hanging out with Patrick even after their first session of messing around - and kept messing around with him - shows this to be the case.

And how would you explain that once they actually had sex, which I gather was several months down the road, Brad told Patrick that he loved him? Would he have said this and felt this if Patrick had been routinely raping him? Come on!

Seriously - this was not rape!
