Holy crap - that first incredible (Come On Eileen) dance sequence?!

It's my favorite scene and I can never watch it just once. It's only like 30 minutes into the movie, but upon my very first viewing, it made me fall in love with the film right there. Almost no matter what came after it, I was going to love this movie.

First thing that grabbed me was Patrick,(who, it has to be said, looks absolutely gorgeous in that tuxedo and white scarf) grabbing Sam and physically swinging her around in a wide circle shouting "get out of the way!" with such urgency and glee in his voice. Because they are going to need a lot of space and there is no time to explain! This one thing - the delivery of this line - is one of the most wonderful moments in the whole film.

Secondly, the idea that this is Sam and Patrick's living room dance - that these two siblings practice dance moves together in their own home is just so sweet and cute. Not something I sure as hell ever did with my brother when growing up.

Lastly, I am in love with the dance itself and how nutty and free it is. They go nuts at first, and then it becomes this crazy formal dance, ending with Patrick swinging Sam up above him and lowering her back down, only for the whole thing to end with Charlie joining them and the three spinning around in a circle together.

I'm just in love with the beauty and spirit of the whole thing. It's a gorgeous piece of cinema - so life affirming and sweet, and I'm saying that as someone who is fairly cynical.

Kudos to the actors, to everyone who made the film.

Also, excellent choice on the song. I'm impressed that these kids would even know Come On Eileen, seeing as it came out in I think 1982.

The film never has any references to dates, so it's impossible to know exactly when it's supposed to take place, but based on all the technology available and the references that are made it seems like it's supposed to take place in the late 80s or early 90s, so Come On Eileen was probably only around 10 years old or so.

Things that make me think it's from the late 80s or early 90s:
* Charlie has a Trapper Keeper
* Charlie has a boombox (and not a computer) in his bedroom
* It's trendy to make "mixtapes" that are cassettes
* At the party the guy gives him back his mixtape and puts on a vinyl record (no CDs or MP3 players anywhere)
* Nobody has a cell phone, the phones are all landline house phones
* The fashion seems late 80s or early 90s

Yes, I have - absolutely love it. I've watched it many times. Very sorry they both worked so hard and only a fraction of their dance is shown in the film.
