Just caught it this morning in a special screening series. Enjoyed the film from start to finish. Oscar Kennedy is a true find! And in his debut role. A juicy part for Bonham Carter as well; hadn't seen her in years. Begging for a general theatrical release here in the States!
They should definitely grant it at least a limited theatrical release; it's arguably Oscar material, not that I have much use for the Academy Awards, but nominations would bring TOAST a great deal of attention. Highmore and Carter are hardly unknowns, and Tim Burton(Carter's hubby) could use his clout to drum up publicity. I suspect that the series in which I saw the film is being used to gauge public interest, preceding a wider platform.
I loved the film. While it was hardly "happy" 80% of its entire length, I thought it was still a very warm, sweet, and solid film. Great acting from the cast, loved the setting, loved the subject matter, loved every bit of it. I don't even know who Nigel Slater is (the real one), but this film kept my interest from start to end. I also loved that the characters weren't one-dimensional; even Nigel was unlikable at times.
This definitely deserves a wider release, not just in the States. I'm from the Philippines and I actually "obtained" it some other way (otherwise there would've been no other way for me to get exposed to this wonderful film)...but if they released this internationally, I'll definitely be the first in line at the cinemas.
very good film...i love foreign movies, and uk ones are pretty good..but a tad dark being very black and white and most dramas. this one was just right..young teen wants to become a chef after he learns to cook cuz his mom doesnt know how to cook well, and he competes with his new stepmother for his dad's love. SO true to the summary..sad, delicious and a tad heartbreaking at the end even. but just curious...what channel can one view his cooking show(s) on? i have comcast here in the US, in NJ, and never even heard of him til i picked up this dvd from the library today. watching the bonus features as i type hehe..just had to review now it was that good. also...is he married or does he have kids at all? saw the last part when Nigel himself made a cameo at the end...he looks quite young for his age. thanks :)
