a character even remarks that he's a master of dissapearing at will yet...
as the film shows he can't leave behind the russians who threaten to kill his every friend - you can't have it both ways.

Yes you can - he had a death wish. Like the russian said later, Statham's character could have taken all 5 of the russians out at his house if he had wanted to.

Statham's character felt incredibly guilty and demoralized due to his previous gig with the NYPD. That's why he took up cage fighting and just let the other fighters pound on him.
