Does anyone else yearn for the glory days of action cinema, where there would be a final fight between two adversaries? Simply shooting someone (after the movie painstakingly went out of it's way to imply a major fight was coming) just doesn't do it for me.

Glad there wasn't a final showdown ala Way Of The Dragon. It was established Statham would have come off 2nd best. The kid shooting the other guy was a suprise, and made it more 'real'
A compromise of the two scenarios could have worked. With both men squaring off, with Statham clearly the underdog in the match. Then the kid could have shot him to save the day.

I completly disagree, that would be a total utter cliché. I loved the ending, could not suprised me more. And that's something MANY directors and screen writers should learn, that it is acceptable to think a little new.. Or if not new, at least of something not "overused".
My wife and I just finished it and we both loved the ending. The way it went from her shooting him to the camera move of Statham just putting him down like a dog was awesome. We both said it out loud at the same time. "Sweet". You can't win, somebody's tired cliche is somebody's kickass moment. I really liked how they went with it. We liked this movie a lot. Thought the trailer was very generic but put it in the cue anyway and was pleasantly surprised. Thought the direction/cinematography was quite clever at times and it had great pacing. This is one of his better ones.
I completely agree, I believe the ending was perfect. I certainly wasn't expecting it. I guess Mei had had enough. Like she said, Luke (Jason) would have lost. The final adversarial showdown of good vs evil has been played out in a hand to hand. Perfect ending.
Then I must have low standards, and thank you for pointing it out for me. I was merely saying, Luke would have lost.... Period, end of story. A fist-to-cuff would have been so passe. So yes, the ending could not have been done any better.
Yes, got me pegged. Let me guess, you like to argue due to your one dimensional thinking? Not once have I ever lowered myself to name calling and such based on someone's opinion, but you ma'am I only have two more words.. Seek help!
Fist to cuff or fisticuff - to fight with bare hands (fists). Or it could take the meaning of fighting to end in handcuffs. The previous is what I meant.
I thought the "Indiana Jones" showdown was perfect. The bounds of credibilty had already been stretched enough with the homeless drunk suddenly physically resurrecting himself because of a just cause. It also allowed the girl the opportunity to practically contribute, besides mentally, to Statham's character's well - being.
The ending wasn't the thing that was wrong with this movie. Amidst piss-poor acting and the nonsensical plot the ending was a minor offender.
Also where was it established that Statham's character would've lost? His adversary was introduced like 10 minutes before the final showdown. In a cheesy action scene he managed to kill a few Chinese goons but that's it.
It was a great ending. If Mei hadn't taken action, then we would merely had another white-boy-saves-foreign-child story. Not only that, Luke and what's-his-name weren't the only adversaries. Mei proved she was as brave, and a lot smarter, than either Luke or any of the bad guys. She sent Ham Jiao home with his tail between his legs, making the excuse that he would never return to New York.
I feel what the OP is saying. After seeing Alex take out that chinese crew, I really wanted to see him fight Jason Statham to see how good he really was. After they shot him, I felt like I was cheated out of a good fight scene until Mei told Jason Statham that she saw Alex fight and that she didn't think he would win. That was clever and somewhat original so I forgave the writer/director for robbing me lol
