She wasn't a child, she was an intelligent and manipulative woman, who knew exactly how she effected people. She kept an air of childish innocence because it was so appealing, and because it disguised her real intentions.

Haven't you seen any of her films? She has that air of childish vulnerability in all of them, and it's sent many a straight man into raptures.

I think what you are referring to was how her insecurity came though at certain times. Her reliance on Lee Strasberg and his wife suggested her need for strong surrogate parental figures, for example. It helps to know that Marilyn had a mostly dysfunctional childhood, and probably needed strong validation as an adult.
