My biggest problem with this film was that I came away feeling she was portrayed as my title suggests, that she was selfish, unscrupulous, manipulative, insecure, tapping into the parts of men's egos that make them fall over, leave their loved ones and do other stupid things. She complained about no-one seeing the real her and continued to play the character she seemingly despised. And I really never thought of "Marilyn" quite that way or not as strongly. I can appreciate many strong, beautiful, talented women and hoped she was one, but in the film she just came across as the transparent flirt using men to makes herself feel better and ultimately failing while leaving idiots and innocents destroyed. She never once seemed to care about anyone but herself. So it irked me a bit. But I'll get over it.

That's actually a very interesting post.
I clicked on it out of curiosity - not benevolently predisposed, I might add :) - because of the title, as I hate gender (and any other) stereotyping.

But you did have something valid to say, and you said it well.

Who are these women that you speak of??? I'm a woman, and have never known ANYONE (male or female) to hate Marilyn.

I do not have a problem with women. My title comes from the the way that some women put down other women who threaten them . For example "She's pretty in an obvious sort of way", "She's OK if you like that sort of thing" rather than a self confident "She does indeed possess beauty, charm and a gift for acting". It's an insecurity thing that I see this Marilyn character very capable of triggering. I have never had a problem with Marilyn Monroe either which led me to the post because I found her character, in this film, to be dismissive of other women. She flirts and doesn't consider if she is treading on the toes of other women. Therefore she would probably rub a lot of women (who should be mad at their weak men) the wrong way and then the comments would start.

My post comes from the fact that I do not like to see Marilyn portrayed this way. I have much more faith in the female sex, of which I am one. I think she was made out to be selfish and inconsiderate to other women. That would get my back up but I would hope I wouldn't stoop to put down the woman alone for catching the eye of my guy.

There are plenty of women who dislike other women. It doesn't mean I dislike women in general. You only need to mention Brad Pitt and a slew of mindless dislikers start picking teams.

I didn't hate Marilyn Monroe, but besides her sexy attributes, I feel she was well over rated. That was her only talent...I couldn't believe that they were saying in this movie what a great actress she was.What? Another Streep? Most of her movie characters, were of the vulnerable type, cause that what came across to everyone, especially the audiences. No one held a gun to her head when she first came across the scene and tried to become a movie star. Was she that naive? Did she not know, in a male dominated Hollywood, that they were going to take advantage of her in every which way, which eventually led to the womanizer JFK, and his brother? She certainly didn't avoid their advances. When it finally sunk in, she resorted to pills and drink, which led to her downfall...Pitiful, yes, but none of her 'husbands', especially Miller, could protect her from herself. The one husband may have been Joe DiMaggio, that might have, but she chose the other path, and divorced him. He was the one that told her not to pose over that subway grate, but she did not listen. I know this post may rile some of her fans, but that is my outlook from what I have read about her.

I didn't realise a preface was necessary, however... I am referring to some women (by all means not all by any stretch) that attack other women whenever they feel threatened. I drew upon the example of Brad Pitt in another reply. "SOME" women wax lyrical about why Angie is better than Jen or vice versa. "Some" women never think about other causes of a divorce such as Brad possibly being a jerk or it just simply time over for that relationship. There are women who love to blame their man problems on other women and even blame female celebrities who they know nothing about. These are the women to whom I refer. There are simply women who lash out at other women. The is how cat fights start. I have never been in a cat fight over a man because it's stupid. I see that I may have given the impression that I feel all women love to hate but consider it a eye grabbing teaser title if you will. If you read my post I think you will see that I am upset because Marilyn has in my opinion been portrayed as a siren without any thought of who she drowns.

Maybe I should have said "A woman that (some) women (who probably should seek therapy) love to hate.

I don't know any women who hate Marilyn. If anything many pity her because of her sad childhood, who was then used by the film industry and made the play the part of a beautiful dumb blonde. If you think she had been in the care system and was probably desperate for attention, so was vulnerable to follow the orders with promises of fame.
Plus even though she was a beautiful woman, even that wasn't good enough and she had to dye her hair and have plastic surgery to fit an ideal image.

I didn't mean people hated Marilyn. I agree that I have never heard anyone say she was hate worthy. I was saying that this film seemed to portray her as manipulative in the way that some woman act, the sort of women that other women roll their eye at if not hate.

My wife absolutely adores Marilyn Monroe's work. Watches it whenever she can.
