This movie is the only reason i have hope for Star Wars 7.

This movie shows that J.J. Abrams can make a good movie. If he is not handed a dumb down stupid script by two of the most idiotic screenwriters working today. Now if could stop with the damn lens flare in every movie. He might have something.

I don't know why everyone places so much effort into hating the lens flare. It has its time and place. It added something special to the visuals in Star Trek and Super 8.

That rug really tied the room together.

Because it's a gimmick and will date the films eventually.

Sometimes it's intrusive, placed in shots where lense flare wouldn't happen, and it's a distraction. When you're hunting for magic mushrooms they are hard to find until you find one and eat it. The you see them everywhere.

Same with the lense flare. Once you become aware of it, you notice it all the time.

Lens flare is what's going to date his movies? Seriously? Not special effects? Not color grading? Not FPS? But lens flare? Not costume design or hair or makeup? So you're saying Gone with the Wind doesn't look dated? Or The Godfather? Or M? Or maybe all those movies do look dated and that's why those directors all suck? Not everyone can be Ridley Scott. The only movies i can name off the top of my head that have aged insanely well are Alien and Blade Runner but even the hair and make-up departments show their time periods as do the computers used in those films. Get outta here guy. Lens flare being the end all be all of dating a movie. You're hilarious.

reply

I think the point is some films age better than others.

Well this movie dosn't have as many lens flairs. But i do think his Star Trek movies wont age well. Because they are just not that good and yeah the horrible amount of Lens Flares.

I disagree, watched this movie for the 1st time today.. and I have to say, it has made me a little worried. Lets just hope Abramz sorts his shizzle out!

reply

Well if Episode 7 dose sucks. At least hes only directing the first one. Another Director could redeem the franchise.

reply

I agree fully -- this film shows that J.J. Abrams can direct in a style that pays homage to the style of a certain type of film, while making it his own. Super 8 looks like early-80s Spielberg in the best way possible. I feel confident that Abrams can do the same with Star Wars Episode VII, giving it all the Lucas touches whole making it its own film.

Actually the creature design was so dumb imo that it made me worried about Star Wars 7..turns our I was wrong AND right.
Wrong because PLENTY of the creatures in Star Wars 7 are cool, even use animatronics much of the time, and just had a cool appearance.
RIGHT because of spaghetti and meatballs...or thats atleast what I call those HORRIBLE, TERRIBLY designed monstrosities that were aboard the Millenium Falcon. OMG I hated that scene so much, to the point it took me OUT of Star Wars. I NEVER thought that a creature from STAR WARS would actually take me OUT of Star Wars.
It would be ONE thing if the creature had a cool design and stayed in the scene.
Or another thing if their lousy design atleast had GOOD cgi.
NEITHER
it was just a pointless scene (you can argue saying, Chewbacca was ruined...like his arm hurt. Or Rey HAD to save Finn in a random pointless scene rather than a good one, OR that it showed what Han Solo was up to over the past 30 years...which I guess is JUST owing gangs money and nothing more interesting...but NONE OF THE ABOVE. It was just "Hey Han Solo..you owe us money" Han Solo says "F__ ALL Y'ALL" then spaghetti and meatballs wreak havoc in a typical SyFy channel scene that happens to be placed in the middle of a STAR WARS movie. Which took me so much out of the movie, I can't even call the movie "great" to me it's nothing more than "good".
Like "hey did you like Star Wars A New Hope?"..."yes I dod :)" ... "COOL want to see the reboot this December?"..."oh it's a reboot?"..."well basically, we basically start out the same, were being re-introduced to this world, AND hell, we even got Death Star 2.0...it's WAYYYYYYYY bigger than the Death Star, even though it can be destroyed MUCH easier. All you need is Finn with his "force" to GUESS where to "blow up" the Death Star, The Force made him a VERY good guesser. He didn't even realize it either, he just guessed and whent along with it, almost endangering the lives of others only without much care, because he is just concerned about rescuing Rey. WELL his guess paid off because everything went smoother than butter. Even managed to destroy the extra extra EXTRA large Death Star in about 20 minutes."...."oh yeah..it IS a remake! just a very very fun remake atleast"
