Why didn't the alien work during the day?

Were there any survivors other than the kids in the pit?

Why did it take so long for it to build the spaceship?

Why would the govt. transport the alien and those cubes not only in the same shipment but at all?

Just how did the teacher figure out which train it was on and when and where?

Why did they have it take away the locket Joe had from his mother? That seemed wrong.

How does everyone just happen to find everyone else within seconds at the evacuation point?

I'll take a stab at a few of these.

Why didn't the alien work during the day?

He's a night owl? No, to avoid detection I'd guess. The military were in the area and he needed to operate with a degree of stealth so as not to reveal his location.

Why did it take so long for it to build the spaceship?

It's not exactly a simple task.

Why did they have it take away the locket Joe had from his mother? That seemed wrong.

It's meant to be poignant. Her locket becomes the last piece that completes the ship and Joe allows it to.
