Kathryn winnick's character

Why is there no name for Winnick's character and why is she top billed ?

reply

The studios themselves do not update cast lists. You could update the cast list if you wanted to, she plays Jake's mother.

reply

You know, I had been wondering about that, too, lol! Thanks for the info, Sawyer. Not sure why she's at the top, but that at least puts the mystery to rest.

reply

I kinda doubt she is Jakes mother. She did all her shooting in Africa not New York. Africa is being used as midworld.

reply

If all of her scenes are indoors, there is no reason her part could not have been shot in South Africa.

This is conjecture, but Karl Thaning (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2056385/?ref_=tt_cl_t13) is playing Jake's dad (according to the imdb page) and he is South African. So from that I think there's a chance that Jake's parents stuff has been filmed - at least partially - in South Africa.

This has been bothering me to no end. Could you please share a link to an article stating who she is playing please? As far as i know they have been keeping her character secret deliberately for god knows why. She even tweeted a photo of herself hiding her character's name on her trailer on set.

reply

She does play Jake's mum. EW journalist Anthony Breznican confirmed it. He was on set in South Africa, talked to the actors and filmmakers, and has written many wonderful articles about The Dark Tower, most lately the one about Wizard and Glass getting turned into a tv show.

Thank you! I can rest easy tonight lol 

Do you happen to know anything about Alex McGregor/Susan??

reply

I got nothing on Alex McGregor, nope.

There was a random conspiracy theorist a while back who kept insinuating that Winnick was actually going to play Odetta/Susannah and that was the reason why her role on IMDB remain unnamed. When I pointed to the article that stated Eddie/Suze were being saved for a sequel, they refused to believe it.

I know it was said around comic con. But that's the only article that has mentioned it at all.
It doesn't make sense really to fly her out to Africa for such a small role. Also she posted a picture with her trailer covering her name up.woukd be kinda dumb to cover up "Jakes mom"
I'm still leaning towards the good little sister of eluria.

I've also been thinking it's weird that after becoming so popular that she'd be playing Jake's Mom. Seems a rather small roll. I would have guessed her to be playing Alie myself. Especially after just having read that bit I can see that being a little more significant. Or maybe she's playing Susan via flashbacks? I get the article says she is playing Jake's mom, but why be so coy about it? Hmmm...

reply

Exactly as well as being the only article that said anything at all about it. No other article knows who she is playing.
I still think it's strange she was flown to Africa for the entire Africa shoot instead of when they were shooting in New york

reply

Then again, what would those in charge of disseminating gain from being blatantly dishonest?

...I just thought of a theory: she IS playing Jake's mother, but she is also playing a "twinner" in Mid-World.

Good theory, and could explain the odd secrecy regarding her character, but Jake's parents don't seem all that pertinent in the grand scheme of things in TDT. If that were the case, i can only imagine there would have been significant re-writes to bulk out her character. Making up story lines seems kind of unnecessary to me considering how much source material they have at their finger tips. But out of curiosity, who would you imagine her twinner would be based on that theory?

reply

Once the idea gripped me, I thought of Alice. Both are about the same age I believe (Allie mentions or at least alludes to the pain of menopause). If we operate under the assumption that Tull or an equivalent town makes an appearance in the first film, it stands to reason Roland would meet her and possibly bed her the way he did in the "original" iteration of reality we read of.

Would our stalwart hero not be momentarily arrested after crossing over into modern day New York City and seeing the same woman as the mother of the boy he has to protect?

Alternately, Winnick's character could be in Tull, but as a character other than Allie.

Finally - and this is a stretch - she might be a relative of Susan Delgado that we see in a flashback.

More recently, I wondered if Walter might not shapeshift into Laurie Chambers to set Jake along a path that would lead the boy directly into his machinations.

I actually suspected this too. I also wondered if Katheryn might be playing Gabrielle Deschain in a flashback. The latter would make sense if they end up giving us glimpses into Roland's past via flashbacks. If they go that route, it's likely that they'd show us those he's lost because of Walter (namely, Susan and his mother), which would explain why he's so determined to track him down.

Now I could see this being a pretty good possibility.

However, all the secrecy surrounding her role does seem pretty strange to me. I can't really see any reason why anyone would lie about her playing Jake's mother, but if that's really who she's playing, it does make me wonder what all the teasing was about.

reply

That would make 3 hands up for Allie  She's such a despondent character with a sad beauty but her backstory is never revealed iirc. Perhaps her characteristics and even her prominent facial scar are a type of spill over as her twinner as Jake's (terrible, guilt ridden) mother. If Roland were to encounter Jake's mum after Tull, it could open up a lot of possibilities regarding how he builds a relationship with Jake.

A lot of over speculation on my part, but i really like this theory and have a tendency to run with something once i get started lol.

reply

I've had my doubts about Winnick being cast as Jake's mother, as it seems such a small role for a rising actress. I actually think she's playing Allie in Tull.

That actually happens often, though, especially if an actor has a particular fondness for the series. If she was already a big fan, it's quite possible she would take whatever she could get (like Christian Slater taking a one line cameo at the height of his career in Star Trek VI just because he was such a fan of the series). Even actors like Mel Gibson would take very small roles in movies just for the heck of it (he took an uncredited role in Fairy Tale back in 1997, well after he was established). I'm not saying that is what happened here, mind you, just that it's not entirely out of the realm of possibility.
