advice to wolfdamage

I don't want to see some stupid action movie, i want to see Dark Tower as written.
If you have read Dark Tower, it says who is in it, how they look, and has a plot. Changing this makes it a new project. If they want to doca new project, don't call it Dark Tower. Simple. If they change it, which they have, then normal fans who have waited over 15 years for this may express their valid belief. People like you don't understand because of your own messed up thinking. Take it out on yourself.

I suggested they make Roland gay because every other part of the story has been changed and it doesn't matter, so why are you getting so hot and bothered? Obviously it would still be Dark Tower anyway and not change anything?

reply

So you've seen the movie(s) and the TV shows already? I didn't think so! From what we know, they have changed the dynamic of the FIRST book to movie adaptation... They need the first movie to do well to justify continuing the story. And we also know that the end of the first movie lends itself right into adapting the books a little more closely. I too am skeptical about some of the changes that were made but everything I have read and seen so far seems pretty legit to me! I think Arcel will handle this film with grace and intelligence since he is a fan of the books.

reply

Yes, I hope so as well. I felt better hearing the show is back on. We will see how the movie actually is. You are right, it's all speculation.

I'm in total agreement with this. Despite my trepidation with what they are doing with the first one, i'm especially wanting to get behind it for tDotT. It's practically written for a (almost) direct adaptation imo.

reply

I too can not wait to see some of tDotT play out on screen either! Hopefully we will get that adapted a little more closely! I was never a huge fan of the first book... It was good enough to keep me reading and luckily I did. The next three books were hands down the best books I have ever read!

reply

Have you read the Marvel comic adaptation of The Gunslinger? If not, give it a whirl!

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing .

reply

I will! I've only barely read the comics... I have a hard time with the way comics are written in general (following the bubbles) I think I am slightly dyslexic in that regard lol... But I want to try!

That wasn't too hard... (: probably easy when Long tall and ugly is speaking! I think k I read Gunslinger Born only.

reply

You know, I always felt the same way about the first book. For me it was a tough read, but it's very short compared to the subsequent novels and even though I consider it a grind, it's a quick one. That's not to say there aren't parts I enjoy. I'd rarely stick with a book I didn't at least someone enjoy reading despite my affection for the author. But then I got to Drawing of the Three and couldn't put it down. And I consider Wizard and Glass the best book I've ever read hands down.

Now, that being said, I can't wait to see Roland on the big screen. I'm pretty confident the first movie can be at the very least entertaining, and then if the sequels are green lit, oh it's on.

reply

This won't do well. It would have done well with better casting and if they'd made it remotely like the Gunslinger book, but they didn't.
And in some insane reality where this cr*p doesn't bomb they can't possibly adapt any of the books after remotely faithfully because they've crapped all over them by picking characters who shouldn't appear till later and putting them in this. Not to mention that casting Elba has made it impossible to get Drawing of the three adapted faithfully.

And it's so cute you actually believe the director is a fan of the books.

reply

Oh, Spidey. This again? They haven't even released a trailer. You may very well be a psychic, but you have no idea how this movie is going to be. It seems like you have a huge chip on your shoulder mostly because of one casting decision. The other characters we don't even know what capacity they'll appear in. Susan, for instance? I'm assuming she'll appear in a few brief flashbacks; not unlikely considering the role she played in Roland's life and the impact she'd have left on him.

You don't have to keep an open mind or give this movie a chance. That's entirely your prerogative. Just try to keep it light here, please. We're trying very hard to enjoy something despite your reluctance. I feel like you might be forgetting the face of your father a little bit here. If you're right, we'll gladly take our lumps after the premier, okay?

reply

Hi Spider! Just wondering if you are interested in future installments at all? I echo a lot of your sentiments, i'm just not quite so outspoken but yes your points have relevance.

Here's a message on a board i've ripped off :

Thankfully, Akiva Goldsman's script discards most of the boring storyline and redundant characters from the Dark Tower and puts much more emphasis on the characters and story arc that REALLY matter. Really smart casting decisions clearly indicate we'll get a Dark Tower adaptation which will be wonderfully different from what book readers imagined (it's so nice when you get surprised!).

Abbey Lee plays Tirana. God I'm so excited! I'm so glad genius writer Akiva Goldsman has realized that Susanna is a far less important character than Tirana. Tirana practically IS The Dark Tower - I hope she will be in every scene.

Jackie Earle Haley plays the third most important character (after Roland and the Man in Black): Richard Sayre! The character is actually important enough to warrant his own movie (maybe in a future spin-off?).

And now, finally, after months of feverish anticipation, it has been announced that Fran Kranz will play Pimli, another key character and fan favorite whose role was thankfully enhanced in Goldsman's fantastic screenplay.

But it doesn't end there; few knew but millions speculated who would play one of the most pivotal roles in the The Dark Tower multiverse: Arra. Now it has finally been revealed that none other than Claudia Kim will portray this wonderfully compelling character.

And, at the very last, fan favorites Dr Hotchkiss and Timmy also have been cast.

Akiva Goldsman really is a mastermind of cinema: it's almost as if he was able to see into King's mind and extract the writer's true vision for the Dark Tower (which King sadly failed to put on the page).

And there's more changes for the better: in the books, the Man in Black is a looming presence, but he only very rarely physically appears. But instead of a weird (and boooooring) mythical, mysterious creature, isn't it much nicer to actually have him as a physical antagonist that shows up all the time and doesn't force you to use your imagination? And now the Man in Black even has a sidekick - isn't that great?

Man, that Horn of Eld sure changed everything for the better. I can hardly wait: this adaptation is already a success in any reader's book (so much so they don't even really need to film it anymore).

Not only do i find this hilarious just because it is, but it's funny because most of it is true imo. I'd actually like to track this person down and add them on FB haha. I really can't word my negative feelings towards TDT better than this person did... BUT, there are some things i look forward to and hope for from what appears to be a bit of a confusing mess (my positive feelings per se). Tull, The Way Station, Mcconaughey's performance, Jackie Earle Haley, mid world in general, even the palaver with Brown if they would be so kind to include him. I'm also no fan AT ALL of SoS so am happy for them to reboot/reimagine that entire book into something more palatable for me which it looks like they are doing (but that's just for me lol). As for continuity, yep The Drawing of the Three will need some attention but apart from a few elements (even though i find them important personally), it's such a polished and well written book that it seems almost impossible to butcher. tDotT is where i hope they lose the mish mash and stick to the books. We're already getting Wizard and Glass as a TV series which is promising, so that pretty much leaves the Waste Lands (well whatever is left of it), Wolves of the Calla and of course the finale. The good thing is, that everyone other than Idris can be replaced with new casting and visionaries on board. I'm not quite ready to give up on this entirely despite my annoyance at what they are doing to it. Are you?

reply

Or outwardly vulgar. Or childish. Or...

lol true, but honest opinions are refreshing (even vulgar ones at times) when you see people tip toeing around what they really think as to not rock the boat i suppose.

My post isn't just for spider, it applies to any poster that feels TDT is being 'butchered' but is still here. And supporters too of course. You've read the post Wesker, surely you understand the discontent among the fans?

reply

Oh I certainly appreciate the support. People on a lot of imdb boards end up butthurt and mentally confronted. They don't like that strange little sensation of doubt and fear in their minds that creeps in when they read me and Spider's posts... That "little feeling" is actually braincells trying to warn them that they are cucks after all. Then they get aggressive and insulting kinda like christians.
