Indian here. There are Millions of Indians who havnt been on an elevator.

India is a land of 1.2 Billion people. And two-thirds of this population lives on less than $2 a day.

You just have to go to any mall in India and if you wait for an hour, you will be sure to find a person from the rural hinterland who is very exited and scared on seeing an escalator.

Similarly for elevators that have automatic doors. Only malls and posh offices have such things. While most urban Indians must have experienced it (most, not everyone), I'm sure there are MANY villagers (and by many I mean millions), who have never been on an elevator which has automatic doors. Can vouch for it. (And other than the main cities, you will find it hard to find a building that has more than 5(3?)floors).

Of course, I'm not denying the enormous development in India. You will get all the luxuries that you see in any other developed country. And the number of people enjoying this lifestyle is also huge.(identical to the population of the US). But its a sad fact that there are many people who haven't benefitted the fruits of development. But please dont paint 1/6th of humanity with a single brush. As a wise man once said "Every thing that you say about India, its opposite is also true."

PS: Why are so many Indians denying this ? Please travel the countryside. You will see things (both good and bad), that you never would have believed. Its a great experience !!

PS: Why do the western movies show only the squalor and the poverty? And why do you show only the dusty plains of north India. And why do you have the sitar music on whenever anything is mentioned about India?? (seriously, No One listens to sitar music in India.) Not every Indian does yoga. Not every Indian speaks with that caricatured 'Indian' accent. And no. No one ever does synchronized dance on the street.

Despod,

It's not just India. It's every culture. Hollywood LOOOOOVEs stereotypes.

American ones too.

Every NYer on TV/movies is the stereotypical "hey how you donin'" Italian.

Every Southerner owns 18 guns and 4 pickup trucks, only one of which actually runs.

Every Texas wears a cowboy hat.

It never rains in Los Angeles. It's ALWAYS raining in Seattle.

And on and on....

reply

That's not true. Some Southerners have 19 guns.

Dude, I live in India !!

And yes, I have seen enough of India to know better.

No it's not. There's far more poverty in Indian than you're apparently aware of. Maybe you should know more about India before you say stuff like that.

Yes, India is very developed but only parts of it. Extreme contrast means you can find extreme poverty next to the very rich. A few of my friends wanted to travel to India for vacation and asked me to fallow. I declined as I knew we would be in secluded areas near the beach and with literally millions of very poor people just outside the area.

As developed as India is, it's also far behind in other areas. The caste system still exists in many parts, the deep and far reaching corruption, and the hundreds of millions with no means to provide for themselves. That is why you see Chines and Indians in big numbers in every country on this planet. In Asia from Vietnam through Arab countries to Europe an all the way to Canada and US.

There are some 25 million Indians working in the Arab countries around the Persian Gulf. They work in horrendous conditions but would rather die than go back because it's even worse at home. And 25 millions of 1,3 is not even a drop in the ocean. The out of control populations of China and India are major contributors to global over population. The Chinese even out compete poor Africans in poor African countries and take over their commerce.

I think these two countries should use the newly acquired riches to strongly reduce the population, say to 1/10, and make sure the riches are divided a bit more fairly. Development does not mean progress in technical areas or the like but improvement in the society system with fair elections, a government that works for the people and a system that looks after everybody and make sure it's not divided in a few very rich and the vast majority so utterly poor.

So sorry but no, India is not developed at all.

Genocide and forced sterilization is great. And I'm sure the economy and the welfare state will be fine with that cut in population.

Not really, if that's the way you write/spell. Everyone in India writes like you, even the ones here in America. If that's how you communicate, then your country India will follow on with this gibberish. As we stand, I am seeing the pattern. Just pull up any Indian profile on Facebook, they write this ridiculous shorthand 'text' lingual like the way you do. So irritating to read!

Indians are powerless to change their evil government, one that the American govt supports and has nothing but praise and support for.

American voters will destroy the economy by 2016. Whoopsy-daisy!
