Someone explain the women's childhood connection.

This happens often with subtitled films. I'm so busy watching the visuals I miss an important piece of dialog. Were the women relatives or just friends? And if they were just friends how did they become friends? When they cut back to when they were children it looked like the main character was always from a more affluent family. She doesn't really seem to like the Bok-nam at all, so what was their connection? it seemed the movie was trying to say that she had a problem with the poor class in the first place as if something about her relationship with Bok-nam made her hate poor people.

I love !

I got the impression that as a child, Hae-won would go to the island to visit her grandfather, where she and Bok-nam became friends.
