Favorite Romeo + Juliet?

Mine is actually not a version of the play but a ballet with music by Prokofief. I once saw it on PBS Dance in America with Natalia Makarova as Juliet, Kevin McKenzie as Romeo, a fantastic (and very good looking) Johan Renvall as Mercutio, ballet's best actor Victor Barbee as Tybalt. It was amazing.

I also liked Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow in the scenes from R&J in Shakespeare in Love.

Zeffirelli's 1968 version. Gorgeous.

The Zeffirelli film from 1968 is excellent. The chemistry between the two leads was great, both equaly capable actors, and equally beautiful.. Juliet was also very young, but it didn't look awkward at all.

I didn't watch the older ones, but I thought the DiCaprio one was okay. It felt a bit unnatural and rushed to me. Gnomeo and Juliet was just horrible.

You really should watch the Zeffirelli version.

I don't think Gnomeo and Juliet was ever intended to be a faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's play.

Has anyone seen Gounod's opera Romeo et Juliette? I have not (I'm a ballet person), but I'm wondering what anyone thought of it.

I prefer the '96 version. Leo was amazing. Exactly how I always read Romeo to be on the book. Wildly moody, passionate, dramatic, overall a good guy that flipped out from time to time, caught up in a series of unfortunate events and bad timing.

completely agree. leo is golden :)

I don't think I have a favorite. I guess, if I had to choose, it would be a tie between the George Cukor version and the Franco Zeffirelli version. Unless the anime Romeo × Juliet counts, in which case, that's my favorite.
By the way, to the OP: I love your signature.
