It was a little like a bad reading...

All but Ed Westwick and Damian Lewis spoke like they were speaking in a simple reading of the script. There was barely any emotion especially from Hailee, and the words were so unnatural. As much as Baz Lurhman's version was completely unfaithful to the original they all spoke the words of Shakespeare so naturally. I found this movie incredibly difficult to watch with how terrible the actors were at reading Shakespeare. I like Douglas Booth in most of the movies I've seen him in, but the whole thing was awkward. Ed Westwick was the best thing in the entire movie. Its a shame really I would have loved to have seen a decent remake with decent actors.

I'm trying to watch it now, and this was my thought exactly. It doesn't sound like people acting, but merely reciting the lines as quick as they can so they don't forget, as if they're going to be shot if they don't get the words right. Especially Hailee, good god. I know she's a better actress then this, so it's so disappointing.

Absolutely. While the others were passable, but no more, I thought Hailee Steinfeld spoke her lines like she was reading from the phone book and had a bus to catch. I couldn't understand a word she said. Was the director out to lunch? How could a performance like that be let go by? They should have stopped her check before she could cash it.
