The film itself said they only postponed the crisis. Market failures are intrinsically apart of capitalism, and I'm utterly confident in how systemic the problem is. My problem, though, is I'm a college student. How do I start preparing for a global depression soon? What are the fundamental necessities and skills I need to survive? What kind've mentality must you have to persevere?

Good question. I think that things won't be horrible if there is a collapse. And the collapse isn't going to take place for a few years. China has a tremendous amount of money invested in the US and their growth (and thus Communist seat of power) is intrinsically tied to the US economy. They will keep letting us borrow money until they run out of money or see their investment sunk and decide to cut losses.
It will be key for the US not to lose any military battles. The US military is the collateral for multi-trillion dollar loans. If anyone can challenge the US in war, it will show US investments to not be risk free, and interest rates on loans will increase from their incredibly low levels.
If the collapse does occur, I'm thinking I will bail. An American school teacher can live like Donald Trump in many African nations. This will be a good way to escape the country if there is a default on debt, similar to what happened with Argentina, circa early 2000s.
There is a writer from Argentina who actually wrote a book about how to deal with a massive collapse that his country faced. He was a student when the collapse happened and has very practical advice on how to survive.

I don't mean to be flippant but I think it's "hope for the worst and you won't be disappointed". And don't expect to get rich from real estate! Ansd s-a-v-e, s-a-v-e, s-a-v-e.......
Pay off credit cards, your home and car if you owe on them. if you lose your job or nest egg at least you won't be living in a shelter.
E Savings Bonds are over 4% right now. It would take a collapse of the government for them to become worthless. You might invest in Swiss stocks or banks. I remember the novels years ago by Paul Erdman. He was a Swiss banker who went to prison for losing a bank investment on cocoa futures which are very difficult to forecast. He had his revenge by writing novels on international financial hanky panky.
Yes, in Switzerland you can go to prison even though you made an honest mistake. They take money more seriously than life itself. Losing money is dereliction of your fiscal duties. Just remember to pay the IRS their share.
Step 1 - Stop selling your old and broken jewelry to these cash-for-gold outfits. Stop handing them the stuff with real value, while they give you in exchange paper that is backed by a promise. You are going to need all the gold you have.
You know if we think about all this can get ridiculous. To live you need money, but money disappears and evaporates so we put it into gold, but we need still need money so we cash the gold in, but then you have less gold, i.e. less money. So what happens then when there's no gold?????...I think tin will be the next metal of choice...you'll need a dump truck when you "cash" it in ...3000 pound of tin = 1 lb of gold.....;-)..ps....sales of dump trucks will go up........
