Not sure what you mean by..."another, more other-worldly, explanation"...
Either..
1.) GOD created these mysteries to confuse us.
2.) Aliens were on Earth in our ancient past, and may be here today.
3.) We're descendants of Martian Refugees.
or.
4A.) Our human civilization is not the first.
Supposedly NOAH's Great Flood, destroyed the First Civilization, and only Noah and His family survived to start our "current" human civilization.
Who knows how advanced the civilization that Noah's parents were are a part of were.
Depending on what you want to believe there, and the historical dating and such...
4B.) Perhaps there was a Human Civilization the predates the last ICE AGE, that had all sorts of technology and knowledge, and a major global disaster during or at the end of the last ICE AGE wiped it all out, and buried everything under ICE, WATER, and SAND.
This may be related to NOAH's Great Flood, or predates "the civilization that Noah's parents were are a part of"
But I do not believe that Cavemen were building Pyramids. So Pick One of the Above.
