Go ahead and spoil it for me, but I gotta know

Why did the Shannons have a third kid?

reply

Something about "it felt like a good idea at the time"

So...stupidity.

I expected that a family like that with a smart dad and a very smart mom wouldn't do that without some compelling reason.

The show tried it's hardest to appeal to absolutely everyone, it was probably done to hook in the anti-chinese and pro-life demographics. Either that or the original reason got lost in a hundred rewrites.

But look closely at any part of it (the cruelty of locking their daughter in a tiny apartment, Jim assaulting the police even though we saw later that Zoe wouldn't have been taken away from them, their not being allowed to take Zoe to Terra Nova even though that wasn't the place with the populatation problem, etc.) and it's exactly what you said, it was stupid at best.

Bad writing and poor CGI is the reason we only got 1 season.

reply

Love and defiance, i suppose.
We see numerous times in the show that love motives most of the bad actions and betrayals in the show. I cant count how many people were doing what they do because of someone they love being threatened or something.
The show seems to hammer us over the head with the idea that everything we do, especially the important things and the bad things, we do to protect our loved ones or reunite with them.

You call that a cameltoe? Put your cheeks into it!

Sadly, humans are not perfect creatures and emotions often override logic.

Because they needed an excuse to throw Jim in jail. They got in trouble for having a 3rd child, Jim assaults the police officer, he gets thrown in jail, and then they can go ahead with the storyline with Jim breaking out and so on.

I'm the only real Nick.
And your real name is Ralph.
Exactly.

I thought the same thing. I kept waiting for them to give a "real" explanation for the third kid - like it's actually the daughter's kid but they didn't want her to ruin her life, or one of the others was really sick and needed a matching donor so they created one - but it never came. For a doctor and a police officer to blatantly break the law, knowing why the law exists in the first place, just because they felt like it is unfathomable and exceptionally selfish. I was really hoping that they would explain this, as it seemed like they kept hinting at something about her birth, but they didn't. I could understand if they had had the kid because they needed a genetic match because one of the other kids was really sick (like in My Sister's Keeper), and they just couldn't handle loosing them.

I hope they eventually do a second season/tv movie/mini series and provide a decent explanation to this seeming act of selfish idiocy by people who know better.

Because the show authors wanted to pander ratings by applying to inheritent positive reaction from humans to children. Sadly people who will prefer a show only because their "think of the children" fetish was satisfied is as numerous as those who refuse to watch one if there is niduty in it.
