Worse graphics than Jurassic Park, made two decades ago

Others have pointed out that the dinosaurs and sets look fake. Less realistic than films like Jurassic Park that were made, two decades earlier.

However, why is this? Terra Nova had a huge $50 million budget. There should be an investigation into what happened to all that money.

Not any more. :o)

You're ignoring the fact that the affects done for J.P would be far cheaper today due to the advances in the field. The poor effects are just further proof that those involved in this project didn't care and had no talent.

A considerable amount of dinosaur footage in Jurassic Park was also done using animatronics rather than CG. There isn't as much CG in Jurassic Park as people think.

Also, a $50 million budget (for an entire season? Or even just a 2-hour pilot) isn't much compared to JP's $229 million budget, especially considering there are only 15 minutes of dinosaur footage in that film (6 minutes of which show CG dinosaurs).

I don't think it's fair to assume the people involved in the production simply 'didn't care and had no talent'. It's more likely time and budget constraints resulted in admittedly crappy special effects.

On a sidenote, I wish people wouldn't refer to CG in TV and movies as 'graphics'. They're not video games.

Imdb says the budget for JP was $63 million. It definitely couldn't have been $229 million real world dollars, because "Titanic" was the first movie with a budget over $200 million. Maybe it's that much adjusted for inflation but we're still looking at quite a disparity here.

Jurrasic Park used animatronics for majority of its creatures, whereas this show could not afford animatronics and had to use CGI only, and cheap one too because they could not afford to render a chase scene for 2 weeks since the episode had to be out in a week. The biggest cost in CGI rendering is time. it takes A LOT of time to render good quality CGI even utilizing rendering farms specifically designed for it. (for example Toy Story 3 took over a day for a minute of rendering)

That sounds fantastic, because JP looks fantastic even compared to some new big budget movies.
