I wanted to like this...

How can you not love a title like "Hobo With a Shotgun"? But it was just too over the top with the gore & violence. And when the hobo finally does get the shotgun & start shooting the bad guys, it's just not as fun as it should be. And what was that with the octopus & the guys in armor? I guess I can see how some folks might appreciate the over the top mayhem, but I'm not one of 'em.

I have to say the trailer was funnier than the film.

reply

I have to say that you are both wrong!!!
This movie has literally more blood and more heart than anything *beep* Hollywood made in years!!!

reply

yeah what was the deal with the octopus?

I also thought they were just trying to be too Troma and cash in on the grindhouse fad.

The movie was average...wouldve been horrible if not for Rutger Hauer.

reply

Complaining about this movie being too over the top is like going to a death metal concert and complaining that the music is too loud.

reply

There's no "deal" with the octopus, it's just a side project for The Plague. And since there's no elaboration, think of it what you will. Crazy science experiments perhaps? That's the fun of it.

...instead of:
"There's a glimpse of something and I need to know everything about it!!!"

We've met before, haven't we?

Those "guys in armor" aren't guys at all. The Plague are demons who have existed since the beginning of time. Those suits of armor don't have men in them. They're empty. The contain the spirits of two demons. They're bounty hunters and if you'll notice on the wall you can see a list of people they've killed. You'll see Abe Lincoln, Joan of Arc, Jesus, The Easter Bunny, and a T-Rex. The Octopus is their pet. They're not fighting it. They're playing with it. The pet likes playing rough.
This idea of The Plague is an idea the director had since he was a kid. It was just an imaginary story he already had all planned out with his imagination since childhood. When it came time to make this movie he figured he should put them in. This is all explained in great detail in the audio commentaries. It's a truly excellent film and it will go down in history as a cult classic. Even if you don't like it or understand what makes it so good. They put their entire heart and soul into this film. Every frame is hours of hard work and dedication and I feel it really shows.

The movie was too repetitive and uneventful for me.

Repetitive? This? How is this repetitive? Example? O_o

Shooting people with a shotgun had little variety, the Plague hanging people from the ceiling got old quickly as well, just some examples I remember.

Likewise. I thought "Rutger Hauer, as a hobo, killing dickheads? I'm sold!" And I really despised it, despite all that. I knew it had been one of the fake trailers for Grindhouse and loved that film (and Machete) but the violence in this one was just too much. I sometimes have a tendency to over react to things so I thought I'd give it a second go and my opinion hasn't changed. 2/10 for me - and that's for the awesome Hobo and Abby.

So how did The Plague kill a T-Rex? Even if they were around during the time of the dinosaurs, who told them to kill it? There were no humans.
