A Conan Writer Went Off About The State Of Late Night Comedy

http://uproxx.com/tv/2015/04/state-of-late-night-comedy/

Andrés du Bouchet has been putting words in Conan O’Brien’s mouth as a writer on Conan, The Tonight Show, and Late Night for seven years, but on his Twitter account Thursday night, he let his own voice be heard while weighing in on the state of comedy. And to put it succinctly, du Bouchet isn’t happy.

Here are the relevant, NSFW-language filled tweets:

Now, is du Bouchet right? Does comedy need a “severe expletive deleted shakeup” right now?

Based on these tweets, I think its fair to say that my late night comedy tastes are probably in line with what du Bouchet’s are and I’m sometimes annoyed by some of the same things that he railed against. But the bottom line is, Jimmy Fallon (with is lip sync battles and his penchant for nostalgia), Jimmy Kimmel (the pranks), James Corden (karaoke), and Chris Hardwick (the king of late night hashtags) are a big part of why late night still matters. On Twitter and on the internet, people are talking about these shows, and while that’s not the same as people watching them in droves, it’s not nothing. Especially as we re-calibrate the way we define success on television. And by the way, the stuff that they’re putting out is fun. And that matters even if it isn’t what some, including me, would say is the “right kind” of comedy.

Fallon — whom I’ll single out since he’s the ratings leader — is a populist, not an edgy innovator. That’s disappointing to those of us who came up watching Letterman and Conan O’Brien. But in the same way that Letterman did his own thing and became the opposite of what Johnny Carson had become, so too has Fallon when you consider the state of The Tonight Show during Jay Leno’s reign. And now, what Fallon is doing is providing a standard for someone else to stylistically rally against much in the same way that Carson did.

du Bouchet mentioned on Twitter that he’s excited to see what Stephen Colbert will do when he goes to CBS, and I am too. Stephen Colbert has the built-in audience, the battle armor, and the hunger to be more than just popular. Maybe he’s the next network late night comedy trailblazer and someone who is going to push the limit and make the people come to him as opposed to him going to the people when it comes to his comedic sensibilities — I don’t know.

What I do know is, we’re caught in a moment where Letterman and Jon Stewart are about to leave us behind and Craig Ferguson already has. But if Fallon gives Colbert something to zag to (and Colbert responds in kind), then all will be well, because there is nothing wrong with there being a version of late night that exists for the masses (Prom King Comedy and all) and one that exists for the cool kids. It worked like that for a long time and it can work again. But if Colbert can’t live up to that awesome responsibility and all late night is left to sound and look alike with only minor variations, then all late night (and comedy) fans will suffer, even though only some of us will realize what we’re missing.

Conan shut him down with this tweet.

du Bouchet definitely isn't wrong. Most of late night on network tv has become unwatchable with the likes of Fallon and Meyers (and that new guy Corden) who come off like sycophantic fanboys in all their interviews, talk about *beep* ass kissers, holy *beep* And these guys don't even do original funny bits anymore, especially Fallon, whose staff seems more interesting in finding what bit is gonna go viral the next day (hes dancing with Michelle Obama! OMG SO HILARIOUS!) rather than actually doing something funny or original.

On Tuesday night’s Tosh.O, Daniel put a target on celebrity games often seen on late night shows and the star-studded karaoke Lip Sync Battle, which is all the rage. He did not miss his target and destroyed in this hilarious rant.

He referenced Andrés du Bouchet, a writer for Conan O’Brien, who went on a Twitter tirade two weeks ago that attacked the state of late-night comedy. He cited how “Comedy in 2015 needs a severe *beep* shakeup.” He slammed formula-driven comedy, “No celebrities, no parodies, no pranks, no mash-ups or hashtag wars. I’m fat. And shove your lip-synching up your ass.”

It was a direct shot at Conan’s competition including The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Late Late Show with James Corden, who all regularly feature celebrity games and lip sync.

The tweets were quickly deleted and he of course apologized. Conan attempted to defuse the situation by tweeting:

However it did open the discussion if these shows are just taking an easy concept of mixing celebrities and normal activities such as karaoke, playing video games, flip cup, charades, Pictionary and photobombs for cheap laughs. Tosh smelled the blood in the water and brutalized everyone as only Tosh can, even lovely Anna Kendrick was not spared.

He sarcastically opens the hilarious segment, “Is there anything funnier than a celebrity pretending to sing a song that a different celebrity originally sang!?” Then tells his audience, “You sheep would watch paint dry if it was called ‘Celebrity Paint Drying.'”

He then decides to mail it in too and starts his own celebrity game, “Tosh’s Hide & Seek with the Stars.” The celebs on this edition of the game are “intellectual child” Keanu Reeves, Anna Kendrick, “the Anne Hathaway of her generation,” and “famous person” Jennifer Lawrence.

While Tosh couldn’t find Kendrick or Keanu, he did locate JLaw in an unusual hiding spot.

So what do you think, does Tosh have a point that all of these celebrity comedy bits are lazy and manufactured laughs or is Jimmy Fallon’s Slapjack uproariously hilarious?

Late night has turned into total GARBAGE! Fallon is a MORON who acts like he's 10 years old! Leno needs to come or just stick a fork in late night!

Dave's retirement means we're stuck with a bunch of late-night hosts who worship celebrities, says Hank Stuever. "Letterman's sense of irony was more than just a path to humor; it was one of the first and most dependable shields against a coming onslaught of celebrity rule," he says, adding: "Have you seen how dumb things have gotten over on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show? Are you like me, have you seen that attention-desperate nitwit James Corden's Late Late Show, which began airing after Letterman's show in March and is even more obsequious than Fallon's? Do you find yourself recoiling at the late-night genre's tendency to elevate the fawning, the self-absorbed? What's going on with all the pretend cliquishness and all that fake sunshine being blown up mutual rear-ends?"

I'm glad he wasn't fired. He's in some funny bits. I saw him tonight. He might have appeared sooner, but I haven't noticed.

I thought his first appearance after the controversy was a few nights ago, when he appeared as the cameraman asking Conan to be his linkfriend (or something).

Yeah, okay, I remember that! Because I remember thinking he usually does the voice of Alan, but it sounded different this time—so I said to myself, "wow maybe they gave him a forced leave or something". But if that's him, then so be it :)

I agree with the author of that article. I especially hate Jimmy Fallon. Empty, soulless comedy crafted to appeal to people who think Adult Swim is full of comedy gold. I only saw episode of Seth Meyers on Late Night, and it had the quality of a public access show. That was early on, so it's possible he has improved, but I don't care enough to give it another try.

Seth is exactly the same as he was since day 1. He's a bit of a robot like that. I enjoy his monologue (for what it is) and especially his "stories", but yeah, I *can* live without watching him.

Late night TV definitely isn't so great and will be worse without Colbert Report and Daily Show. But I think the article itself is more accurate.

Especially with the Jimmy Fallon hate. I don't care how many "comic's comics" hate Jimmy. He's genuinely enthusiastic about his work and it's reflected by his guests, who more often than not love to be there.

The show isn't that funny, but neither are Kimmel's or Conan's. I just think they are all funny guys and it's enjoyable seeing them interview certain people. Remotes are usually funny. Other than that, it's all very meh

EDIT: Also his railing against celebs and celebrity cameos is just laughable. He wants it to be him and all his cool friends doing cool, edgy things. Sorry, late night TV is one big vehicle for TV and movie promos, nothing more.

Leno is/was the KING of late night. NO ONE set up and delivered monologue jokes like him! ALL of late night now sucks without him!
