Did anyone else think it was a bit unreasonable that his father wanted every call answered on the house phone? That's what voicemail is for, lol.

I agree. No father who loves his kid and is not a complete idiot would call his kid a loser. Perhaps if the kid has no job & still living in the basement at 30. But not if it's a normal teenager in school who just doesn't go on parties much. share
And even from a teenager's standpoint, Thomas really didn't seem like much of a social outcast which was weird, most movies that feature someone like him normally actually make the character into a socially inept weakling or dork, but Thomas seemed like a perfectly normal, decent looking, everyday teenager. Plus aside from not going to many parties, he didn't really seem like an introvert either.
