Balloon dog scene

Does anyone know if they ACTUALLY tied the dog to the balloons? I know it might be silly, but I found it really disgusting to do that to a dog. Please someone tell me they did not hurt him during the making of this crap. . .

(sorry if you guys disagree, but I just think that the crappiness should have stayed with the consenting adults)

The animal action was monitored so I'm sure they had it under control. He was never actually in danger of floating off. Someone always had the string on the other end, even if you don't see it, and probably just removed the string/holder with CGI.

"Oh, my God. Bear is driving! How can that be?!"
