When you notice the writers were far too concerned to deliver a "clean" and "political correct" comedy for every liberal, feminist and minority you get something like this. A comedy that completely falls flat. Even the black sidekick could've been done better... but here it didnt really work.
I thought the black sidekick (Agent Tucker) was funny, in that he was a good boy who lived with his mum. It went against the stereotype of blacks being cool, wild, tough etc.
The things I thought were particularly funny were: 1. The killer cleaner. 2. Other people being mistaken for the killer cleaner. 3. The rooftop chase in Hong Kong where English takes sensible options and keeps right behind the fugitive. The whole sequence defies expectations. 4. The scene where he tries to put his pants on without Kate noticing and ends up putting them on back to front. 5. His patronising attitude to Tucker ("Susan" etc). 6. The scene where he fights himself. 7. The scene where he falls out of the cable car.
They could have made more of the Rolls Royce and Kate, however.
The movie didn't feel a bit like the makers were aiming forcedly towards political correctnes. I though Atkinson was very much like a Connery type Bond, who was thrown in more modern setting.
i agree. its like so cliched 2 be political or outrageous now...really. so tired of dis bs. its actually refreshin there r wholesome comedies like dis 1 devoid of fart jokez, potty humor, or da f-werd dat u can take ur kidz 2 and not worry bout all da bs goin on...
I don't know exactly what you found "politically correct" in the movie. It seems like that's become the go-to criticism nowadays and it ends up not meaning anything. As someone explained, Tucker was a spin on "the black sidekick" who's usually a wise ass, street smart guy. Here we had a shy mama's boy, playing video games in his room.
Plus, you had a lot of asian villains, you can't get more un-PC than that.
And where exactly was the liberal-feminist part? I misssed that...
It was funny, way funnier than the hangover 2, the entire theatre was bursting with laughter and the movie's rated pg in my country - not everything has to be rated R to be funny
I think the shock value added to movies is an anecdote for cheap laughs. Granted I have enjoyed some raunchy movies in my time. Johnny English 2 was pure and relied more on performance from the actors rather than dirty one liners. I understand that not everyone likes the same things, but I don't think the movie had any kind of PC message it was trying to display or stay away from. In fact Rowen Atkinson has been doing just this with Mr. Bean for decades, before the PC nonsense came into play.
To be fair, if you've named yourself after Rob Zombie's serial killer character from House Of a Thousand Corpses http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0008176/, you lose some degree of credibility when complaining that another movie is "too sanitised"!
I thought it made a reasonable alternative to austin Powers - maybe not as consistently hilarious but certainly more kid friendly and still enjoyable
