Loved the film!

Johnny English is back!

The film kicks off swiftly indeed, with English being retrained for service. If there is one impressive thing, the pacing is spot on. Whilst the first film leant more towards witty dialogue, Reborn relies more on visual gags. Standout sequences include English on a gadget powered wheelchair racing down the streets of London, along with the majority of action scenes. The chair gag in Mi7 is also most welcome. The music composer must be commended for a rousing score, frequently referencing the Johnny English Theme, particually during the splendid opening titles sequence. The cast is solid, particually Rosamund Pike. Whilst Ben Miller does not appear unfortunately, Daniel Kaluuya does an average job of replacing the sidekick role as Agent Tucker. The other performances are pretty spot on.

Overall Oliver Parker and Rowan Atkinson have made a fun, entertaining film, barely missing the heights of the first adventure. Stay for the after credits scene! And it's much better than the trailer suggests...very pleasently suprised!

How much screen time do Rosamund Pike and Gillian Anderson have? Are they typical "Bond girls"?

Thanks so much for the review!

reply

Not very much I'm afraid. Anderson is effectively the replacement of Pegasus in the original film (and a nice nod is that Pegasus is her codename they use in the film when addressing her) she gets about as much screentime as the original Pegasus. Speaking of which I was sure it was supposed to be the original Pegasus in the opening scene, but it's a different actor as the face is covered up above the eyes. That may be Bough he is talking to, but I really don't think it is. You can hear the Johnny English Theme in the opening scene.

Pike doesn't have much time either, much less than Natalie did in the first film. She does get a few scenes but is mostly a supporting character with not much to do but she has her moments!

If you want photos from the carpet (I got some with Pike, Gillian and Rowan) send me your email :) Glad you like the review!

reply

Also, Pike's character is really not meant to be a sidekick or "Johnny's equal" she's an emotional support. Another thing that impressed me about the film was there was no noticable CGI except one shot when English is on the crane, and the end fight sequence has poor CGI. Other than that they're clearly real stunts and the music has no techno in it...the film feels like an old school adventure.

Thank you so much for the response. I appreciate it.

No worries! :) Look foward to your review!

Is Rik Mayal actually on the film because I heard he was?

reply

Are you Ben Miller isn't in it? He's listed in the cast and I remember him doing a Tweet which read something like "day filming on Johnny English 2 today" or words to that effect.

Any nudity or sexy scenes from Rosamund Pike?

reply

Hi Chris, My friend and I were looking out sharply for Bough the entire film, and he was never acknowledged, seen, or had no lines or closeups. He is shown briefly in the trailer but either an alternate shot was used, or it was cut. Or English walks straight past Bough (not in closeup) and fails to even look at him. In otherwords if Bough was in the film, he would be a virtual extra. It's possible it's him in the very opening scene (you'll see what I mean) but I didnt think it was. So in otherwords theres a 99% chance he isnt in the film :(

Hi Henry, not sure about Rik Mayal because I havent seen his work before I dont know who he is in the film! It says on the Wikipedia entry so one would assume so (although we know what happened to Bough)

POTENTIAL SPOILERS BELOW

Garnet, there's no nudity or sexy scenes from Pike, she does have a romantic scene with English, and they share a moment together towards the end of the film.

Hi there iamincredible!

Like everyone else, I very much appreciate you taking time out from your life to answer our many questions : )

I was wondering if there was a blonde female villain in the movie. In the cast list she is identified as Madeleine. If so, does she receive much screen time or participate in any fights or action sequences?

Thanks again, mate!

reply

Hey Mickey!

No worries, it's fun sharing :)

Yes she indeed! She appears also in a flashback sequence of English's failed mission, in which he has full black hair, which was nice. Madeleine doesn't have any fight scenes, but appears in quite a number of scenes, she is a henchwoman.

reply

Thanks very much, that is great to hear!

Is she strictly a background character or does she have any scenes where she is the focal point?

I'm a bit of a sucker for beautiful women participating in slapstick comedy, so you'll have to excuse my curiosity : )

reply

No worries :)

She is most certainly the focal point in a few scenes!

If you love beautiful women in slapstick comedy, most characters play the film straight, which makes English that much funnier. The film is released tomorrow here in Australia so there will be more reports/reviews hopefully.

Thanks for the review! Was Burn Gorman (Torchwood) actually in it? Was it a "if you sneeze you miss it" kind of role or did he have something significant to do? He's in the credits but not shown in any of the trailers. Thanks.

reply

Burn Gorman has a small role he appears a few times with some lines.

Love film love cinema keep the suits at bay.

this film is fantastic, it has the most boring chase ever! (on the rooftop) but its funny as hell :) it was better then the 1st one in my opinion :)
but i didn't see Bough in this movie? and he's in the credits.. has he changed much or something cause i didn't notice him... and the film has Tim mcInnery who played Percy and Darling in the blackadder series :) I gave this film an 8

reply

I have to see this. Because it's already out in cinemas where i'm from.

Agreed about the rooftop chase but it works because it's funny. Bough appears for a second in a trailer but the scene was cut from the film

reply

Cracking film! Saw it again this afternoon. The "Word Up" bit slays me whenever I see it. It's just so silly!

I loved it too! 
