Empty Suits: Worst episode in their history???

This show used to have some interesting twists and turns but last night's episode left me flabbergasted !

In no particular order, things I found wrong or crappy:

* The whole usage of the "A Few Good Men" jury scene was atrocious !!! ... Jessica is a genius lawyer as a result?
* Jessica is all over the place: From not wanting Zane to help the firm because she wants her name first and then the very next episode she quits the firm ... Why not take the help and leave those who survive her in better shape?
* The whole Death Row story lacked ANY suspense whatsoever... Did anyone for one second think he was going to get executed???
* The death row guy thanks Jessica more than Rachel who fought for him all along...
* The casting was terrible... the death row guy's daughter looked NOTHING like him ... Oh yeah, she was black, that should do it.
* I cannot stand Mike. A thankless twit...
* Mike is an ex-con and he gets JOB OFFER, and he is THINKING ABOUT IT ??? ... Does he have any idea how hard it is for ex-cons to get jobs... In particular in this economy !?!?
* Do people just walk into that place without being announced... they can just walk into anybody's office and get into conversations like it is not rude at all???
* Can Donna get a drink too, or she has to be stuck with Harvey's 2nd sip ?
* Harvey's excuse for not getting any texts was that he was visiting different partners or whatever ... What does he do in the taxis/buses/subways on the way there???
* There is ZERO chemistry between Rachel and Mike

Anyone wants to add to this list ???

reply

LOL, like Harvey takes "taxis/buses/subways." ;-)

Well, it was her going away party and I enjoyed it. They put the focus on her so she could go out with a win.

I believe in winning the case the Death Row case made her realize she didn't want to be a corporate lawyer anymore, and she knew that Harvey and Louis wouldn't want a merger anyway. If so, they could approach it after she left

Well then i guess you should stop watching any movies or shows because the good guys normally win. Again, this was a closure for Jessica and she went out on a win.

I didn't notice this but Jessica was the one that got the verdict. Yeah they could have added a little more for Rachel, but again this was Jessica's farewell episode and they can always have him thank Rachel next season.

Not even going to touch this. I know many siblings that look more like one parent and very little like another.

Again just throwing in that just because you dont like it it has to be wrong

I think Mike wouldn't have a problem anywhere with his skills. If you would have listend to the show he didnt want to put any more pressure on PSL by coming back and dragging them down anymore. It was a noble act. Plus it was meant to add a little drama on if Mike was done or not, which we know he will come back.

I know right. I mean i want to watch a show where they have to sit outside for 30 minutes before they are allowed to enter and only about 5 min of actual content. sounds like a winner.

Donna wasn't in the scene when the glasses were brought in. So technically if she wanted one she should have brought in her own. And i thought it was great that Harvey offered her his because it meant she was part of the team. They could have easily just left her out of it.

Actually its not uncommon for professionals to turn their phones off when dealing with clients so that they can't be interrupted. Its called an off button. I know most people don't realize that electronics can be turned off.

I wouldnt say zero, but its not horrible for me. I watch for so much more of the show that it doesnt bother me.

My point was that the Death Row story was incredibly predictable and they used to write MUCH better stories.

I think Jessica was inconsistent: If she was going to quit, then share Zane's offer with the other partners... am I so off in thinking this???

Yes, I am aware of the off button... My point was (and I am a "professional" whatever you think that means), I catch up with all the other stuff I have going on when I am going to/from places ... I was saying that Harvey's excuse seem lame since everyone nowadays finds time to multi-task... Specially when you have a whole bunch of important things going on.

Yes Donna walked in late, but how about handing her her own glass?

I get that we don't have 30 minutes to wait for someone to be announced and enter the room, but the way they do it seems cheesy and badly scripted...

I see that you WANT to like the show and NOT see any of my points, and that is fine ... I just thought it was poorer than other episodes I had watched ...

I think this is the weakest season in the shows history. It probably should have ended with Mike going to prison and that's it. This whole colluding with the SEC to get Mike a pardon was definitely the jump the shark season. But of course if the viewership is still high, then USA will still keep going to the money machine. Next season expect alot of Harvey VS Lewis power struggle at the firm for who will be the Managing Partner.

reply

Maybe Jessica turning down the offer was a final *beep* you" to Harvey and Louis for all the times they screwed her over.

reply

And then she is toasting drinks with them? Does not seem like the nice person the writers want us to think she is.

New York doesn't have a death penalty.

Good point!

Well, it's obvious for you is the worst episode.

For me, it was the best episode of the half season.

a) I loved the A Few Good Men use around. My favorite parts of the season.
b) I think Zane made clear that his offer was personal. To her, not to Harvey/Louis.
c) I did. As the show aired here later than in USA, the internet had spoiled me that Jessica left. I thought it was because she couldn't cope with a mistake that cost the life to someone. So it was a total shock to me that they saved Leonard.
d) Of course, Jessica risked her whole firm for him and she was the one who succeeded with the veredict.
e) What? People often doesn't look like their parents.
f) agree about cannot standing Mike
g) Mike would easily find a job because in this show Mike can do anything
h) Agree about people going everywhere, but it's a problem of the entire show, not this episode.
i) She entered the room and had no drink, Harvey very cutely offered her the glass for the toast. I liked that moment
j) Agree about the stupid Harvey excuse for not receiving messages.
k) Probably true about Mike/Rachel but it's not a problem of this episode only.

@pauli (and other discussion of these points)

The offer was for the firms to merge. Jessica revealed that as she read the offer.

Jessica made her decision to leave the firm after that moment.

Some people don't have to read every text as it comes in. If you text me, I might not read it for several hours ... maybe the next day.

Mike is the most interesting character on the show, but they did err when they took the focus of the show off of Mike and what makes him unique. They need to get back to that.

Of course they were going to win the capital case. That's a given when you watch these shows. Perry Mason won every case (but two) for nine years. People watch to see how, and because they enjoy the characters and their interaction.

They are going to have to introduce a new character to fill Jessica's role. She was the voice of reason when everyone else was busy being a loose cannon. The "merger" could have done that, as the Robert Zane character could easily be that person.

I was surprised that they didn't use Jessica's devotion to her pro bono client in a more dramatic board room scene. That would have been a more satisfying conclusion than the "deus ex machina" stock purchase. Plus, you can't actually quietly buy up a majority interest in a major corporation like that, for a few reasons. The most important is that there isn't that much of its stock on the market all at once. You'd drive the price up to ten times the current bid price if you tried. Even if you could find a small group of major stockholders and try to buy the stock directly from them rather than through the market, there's no way you'd get them all to sell without protracted negotiations and paying a high premium. However, there are also SEC filings and public disclosures involved in executing a hostile takeover. It takes at least months just to get started.

Yes, the complaint about the daughter not looking like Leonard was just dumb. However, I thought the "young Jessica" needed to look more like Jessica ... different bone structure, different nose, different pigmentation.

All that said, we've watched every show, and will continue to do so as long as it lasts. USA has consistently had the best series over the last 15 years or so, compared to the traditional "big 3".

@vranger
Well, I was commenting on the OP points.

When Zane offered to merge he explicitly says it was personal. For me it was clear than his offer was to Jessica and wouldn't hold without her. She says no for the reason she mentioned, she wanted to be the top partner. Then she went home, she thought about all that and she decided to leave. By that time, she was under the impression than Reynolds had already went to Zane. At the end, when she realized Luis and Harvey had managed to keep him, she probably thought Zane wouldn't want to merge without her.

It's not explicitly said, but it's not too far fetched, so it won't be a point making it the worse episode.

And I understand about texting, but you are probably not a super well paid corporative lawyer with a firm in danger. When you are in that situation you want to be available to everyone, specially the list of possible clients that could be cancelling appointments and things like that-

reply

If a super high paid corporate lawyer is pulling out their phone to read texts in court, or in a meeting with a client, they won't be a super high paid corporate lawyer for long. LOL When you're on one client's job, you don't distract yourself with another client's job.

@thecure - I think you spend too much time playing Candy Crush while the TV is on. You miss a LOT. LOL
