Opinions Please.

I'd heard a ton of great things about Suits, so I've decided to watch the pilot, and I'm really enjoying it so far.

But then I looked up Suits and found... well, a ton of negativity. I thought this show was generally regarded as really great TV, so seeing so many people say it's "soap opera crap", "filler TV" and stuff along those lines... well, I was pretty surprised.

So... should I continue? Is it good or not? Quite tired of dealing with negativity towards some TV shows, if I'm going to deal with it here I'd at least like to know if it's actually good before I invest time into it.

reply

If you enjoyed the pilot, you should definitely give it a try.
A show can't keep running for 6 years without changing. I don't know a TV show where the original pitch lasts more than 2-3 seasons and no change is made.
For example House became less procedural and more character oriented around season 4-5, Dexter changed once we understood who he was, etc...

So don't fall for the bad comments, just try and make your own opinion. If you don't like it, you can still stop whenever you feel like it :)

reply

Thank you both for the responses. I'll do that (continue with it), I just asked because I was hoping to stop before I'm invested if it really does get really bad or something. Or if it isn't good in general.

reply

I enjoyed it so much that I saw the whole seasons twice, and consider watching it one more time :)

reply

Haha same here ;)

reply

Gotta say, I'm really enjoying it so far. Only up to season 1 episode 8, though.

reply

May I know how you got the series, please?

Yafai M.

reply

It's on Netflix in Australia.

reply

Uh, yep, I pretty much love this show. On S1E11. Fantastic.

Harvey is pretty great in every way, love how he mentors Mike, Donna is amazing, even Louis is fantastic. So.

reply

Seasons 1-5 were pretty darn good, but stop watching there, Season 6 starts the decline into soap-operay nonsense.

reply

I appreciate the feedback, but I simply won't be able to stop. I just won't be able to, I can't stop a show once I'm invested, I have to see how it continues.

Dexter Season 5-onwards was a massive step down, but I don't regret watching it (well, except for maybe that incredibly bad series finale), for example.

I feel like I'll still probably like it, even if it's not as good or more soap-y, anyway.

reply

That's fine, but you can't say we didn't warn you!

Is it really that bad?

reply

No it isn't ;)
Just try to watch it and then we'll talk about it then.

And you're already at ep 8? Looks like you're binge watching your way though season 1 :D

reply

At season 2 episode 4 now!

(Mike) "Ross and Rachel" cannot be a coincidence.

reply

OK... so ill talk to you tomorrow about season 6 ?

reply

Hahaha, sorry to let you down. At season 3 episode 11 now.

This is the season most people consider one of the worst, right? Not as great as season 1 or 2, but, I mean, it's still pretty good to me. Still liking it a lot.

Of course the mains are my favourite, but I'm surprised at how much I like the recurring characters in this show. Tanner, Scottie, Cameron Dennis and even Hardman (although that might be from his role as Gale in Breaking Bad, where he was such a nice guy).

reply

I loved Scottie too. I think Abigail Spencer is a fantastic actress.

I also love how Jessica talks back to Harvey and Louis (but I'm not a fan of her wardrobe at all😓)

reply

Up to season 6, only got a few episodes left. :(

I like it but it's less impressive than most other seasons for me so far, I think. Considering I love 1, 2, 4 and 5 and can't figure out which of them I like less, I guess that makes season 3 and 6 my least favourites. Will need to re-watch to be sure though.

reply

For me Suits is one of the best shows on tv. But like many shows it has had it's good seasons and bad seasons. Seasons 1-3 is great. Season 4 was not so good. Season 5 was okay. And this season is okay. I hope that they end it next year because I think it's run it's course.

The show tends to appeal to people who work in law, finance and are general corporate mutts. I like it because it serves as a reminder of how power works and how merciless the world can be even behind a sophisticated veneer of a law firm. Mike the best character to watch in the first few seasons. Because you see that he has to develop from being a nice guy who doesn't want to hurt others. To a guy who needs to be ruthless at times or else he'll get thrown under the bus.

Of course the negative opinions vary. But in general I've noticed that the negative comments come from people who don't like alpha like successful characters, people with little or no appreciation for how the world works, and the usual female hatred.

reply

Aw man, I was telling myself is season 3 is one of the worst seasons (because most people I saw put 6 and 3 last), then I'd be fine. Now you had to go say 1-3 is great. :(

Just kidding, but I think I'll be good. I heard season 5 was a return to form.

reply

I like Suits. It's a good show. In fact this season (S6) is not as bad as the comments make it sound IMO. I don't think you should quit after 5. Give it a chance. There are some things that don't make sense and feels choppy. Some characters make really stupid decisions but overall it's still a decent show. For me Harvey's story line is the most interesting and it keeps me invested. I love his dynamic with Mike, Jessica and Donna. Anyway let me know if you made it to S6 :)

reply

Oh, I'll definitely continue.

Season 4 so far is waaay better than the first half of season 3 (and I liked season 3, just not as much). Although Rachel/Logan flashbacks over multiple episodes isn't so great.

And hey, SPN's my favourite show. :)

reply

And hey, SPN's my favourite show. :)
I've read your posts there :) SPN is my favorite show too. Suits is not bad either. Donna used to be awesome but the writing for her in S6 has not been all that great. But Jessica was in fine form. Her scenes with Harvey were awesome. Louis keeps going from smart to clownish every other episode though I don't mind it as much as some others do. It is bad writing I know, but it adds some levity to an otherwise serious show. Anyway what season are you on now and how is it?

reply

Oh awesome. :) Been watching S12?

I really love Suits, at least that's how I feel right now. I can see why some people love Donna and why some people don't like her.

I'm on season 5 episode 4. I'll be watching right up to season 6 episode 10. Season 3 was the weakest so far, quite easily to me. I still like it, just not as much as the others. I thought season 4 was awesome, I really liked it, actually. Especially the first half, but the whole thing still. Of course season 1 and 2 were great too.

reply

I never miss an episode of SPN. Liked the premier but the 2nd episode was much, much better. Enjoying Mary's intro but don't like the BMoL at all.

I'm in the love Donna camp. But the writing made her look a little obnoxious in S6 and she actually didn't have much to do story-wise. I loved season 4 too. I enjoyed S5 for the most part. And I know I'm a minority on this board but I totally enjoyed S6. It had a lot of flaws (and logical inconsistencies) but overall it was pretty riveting. I liked it. Hope you do.

reply

Yeah I agree, season premiere was good (not great) but episode 2 was better. And yes, liking Mary and the new Lucifer that isn't a moody teenager.

In the later half of season 5 now, it's really great. 5, 4, 1, 2, 3 might be it for me, but I'd really need to do multiple re-watches to confirm that. 1 and 2 might be ahead of 4 and 5, not sure. How about you?

I watched the show live. I wonder if binge watching it will affect the way one ranks the seasons. Anyway I've never really thought about ranking it so this is just what I feel right now 😀 It might be different if you ask me a month later. I might have to do a series re-watch to know for sure.
Anyway here goes S5, S2, S4 & S1 tie and then S3. I actually liked S3 even though I rated it last. I'll wait and see how S6 ends before I rate it.

reply

Oh, so sorta similar to mine then.

1, 2, 4 and 5 I basically don't know which I prefer. All I know is, I like them all and 3 a bit less.

reply

I feel the same way. Liked all the seasons and it's hard to really rank them. So do you have any favorite character(s)? I like all of them but Harvey is the main draw for me. I think he is bad-ass yet endearing. Gabriel Macht is totally convincing as a lawyer/closer.

reply

That's difficult because I like most of the characters a lot, too. Even the guest characters a lot, like Robert Zane.

I guess Harvey... but I do like Mike a lot. Jessica and Louis can be annoying sometimes (usually when they're getting in the way of Harvey or Mike), but Jessica is super smart and badass, and Louis is pretty amazing when he's not making another stupid decision, which is something he does a lot. I like Rachel, don't dislike anything about her but don't like anything about her too much either. Donna is a mixed bag for me.

reply

Oh, I'll definitely continue.

And hey, SPN's my favourite show. :)

I love SPN and I enjoy Suits a lot too. Nice to see fans with similar viewing choices. I think there are a few more SPN & Suits fans. Maybe we should form a club :)

So how do you like the show so far? I liked S5 the best. Of course S1 and 2 are a close second. I don't know why S6 recd so much hate. It wasn't bad at all. I was ok with it except for Louis's story. That was lame by Suits standards. But I liked seeing Harvey pushed to the limits to save Mike. It brought out a different side of him. Pretty intense mid-season finale as well. Overall it was a decent season IMO.

Things they could improve on... make Rachel less whiny, get Louis back into the main story-line, introduce a few more case of the week episodes instead of just internal drama. Anyway I'm excited (actually apprehensive) to see how Suits moves forward without Jessica. I liked her. She was badass and her scenes with Harvey were excellent.

Heh, yay!

Any other shows you'd recommend?

I agree with pretty much all of this. Season 5 is my favourite, too. Along with S1 and S2. I also loved season 4 (especially the start of it).

Jessica was definitely badass sometimes. Sorta sad she's going.

Yeah, season 6 was good, just not great, IMO.
So how do you like the show so far?

I have now completely caught up and can say for sure that I love it. Not top 5 for me or anything, but I did really really like it. Definitely going to re-watch it sooner or later.

reply

Don't believe everything you read. Watch the show, if you like it, then like it...

The writers write and the actors act. I like the show, hate some of the writing, and dislike some (one) of the actors (I think the sign of a good actor, sometimes, is how much you believe the acting and sometimes - how much you hate the character).

Often, even in a Really Good show, there can be a Whole Season that no-one likes. For what ever reason - new writers, bad story line... What ever.... That doesn't make it a bad show. The next Season could be Grrrreat!

If you like the show, then like the show!

Well. Day 12 since starting Suits. Up to the season 5 finale.

Season 5 has been amazing. Feels like end-game stuff. What was the critical and fan reception to season 5? Anyone know?

reply

I enjoyed every season of it. The conversations are smartly written. If I were you, as you are enjoying it so far, is keep watching. Also consider that over 50% of the general population has no taste for good things. The better shows require more attention and intellect to comprehend, hence why Trump is so popular ;)

reply

Heh, you have some good points, but I wouldn't worry about be stopping because of that, I'm up to season 6 episode 10 now! 20 minutes from being completely caught up!

I do think season 6 wasn't as good as some of the other seasons, but I don't think it was bad at all.
