This Movie Is Whitewashed Trash

It really does say a lot about Warner Brothers in that even though there is a lot of controversy surrounding the casting of their Akira live action movie they went ahead anyway with another Japanese based adaptation and cast a white lead for, "Edge Of Tomorrow" which is based on the Japanese novel: "All You Need Is Kill".

Here is the link to the official English language translation of the original Japanese novel: http://www.haikasoru.com/all-you-need-is-kill/

The interesting thing to note about this is that in the original novel while the main character was Asian (his name is "Keiji Kiriya") the main female lead was a white American (Rita Vrataski) so it's not like white people couldn't have been in the movie if it was kept as it was in the original novel. The original novel was actually quite ethnically diverse as apart from those two leads there was a part Latino part Japanese sergeant and a Native American female technician. However, anyone who wasn't white in the books (which was mostly the entire cast) was whitewashed in the movie made by supposed "liberal" people in Hollywood including the ridiculous like having a Japanese guy in his 20s being bastardized into Tom Cruise.

What's even worse is that this racist trash is being hailed as some great thing so it is having its whitewashing being whitewashed.

Just another incident of Asian Americans, like other people of color, being denied opportunities to get lead roles in major Hollywood movies.

There is no such thing as whitewashing, cause the term itself is pure racism. Its part of every culture to copy tales from other cutlutures. Thats called cultural exchange. If you dont like that cultures exchange tales (that works BTW in any way ... japanese copy european tales so often, its not possible to get an overview of that anymore. And thats perfectly fine, cause it shows that not only japanese have interesting stories to tell) then try to get some contact information of the KKK. They surely appreciate your view of isolated cultures.

BTW People Of Color is the next racist trash. White is also a color. So its still white people, black people, etc. If its necesarry at all to differ people by their skin color (something only racists too on a regular base).

Wrong. This is the official (and only) film adaptation of a novel. Fans of a book have every right to feel dismayed when the big movie version is unfaithful.

I know this post is from six years ago and you'll likely never see this response but I just wanted to drop in from the future to tell you congratulations. The rest of the planet (Hollywood, in particular) has come around to your type of thinking. And it's been a complete disaster. Thanks for being on the ground floor of the movement to bitch about, be outraged by, and to ruin everything.

reply

For reals. I actually own the original novel, and its manga adaptation.

OP is a dumbass and we continue to deal with this nonsense.

reply

Here’s another memo from the future: Asian actors are NOT an impediment to success (Squid Game, Shogun, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Crazy Rich, To All the Boys…) so the bigots here can retire that talking point

reply

Yawn --- You're a bad joke,,, another racist POS

reply

“Bad joke” and “racist POS” does describe this movie and its defenders pretty well.

reply

This is an old archived post, but I wonder if the OP bitched when when Will Smith was cast in white roles like "I, Robot" or "I Am Legend"? Hollywood's always had a race problem, yet people like the OP only complain when white people are cast.

reply

You need to get over yourself

reply

It's a good movie, and Cruise and Blunt were very good in it. I don't give a crap about the book and the race of the characters in it. I have a feeling those who complain that this is "racist" aren't complaining when white characters, and even white historical figures, are switched to black in movies.

reply

Speaking for myself, your feeling is wrong.

reply

People prefer to watch films with white leads because they tend to be better actors with more mass appeal with audiences. This in turn brings more money for studios since films make most of their money from North America and Europe which were regions that were 99% white until recently.

It's not rocket science, shithead.

reply

Then care to explain Black Panther? Or Squid Game? Or Get Out? Or Crazy Rich Asians? Or Aquaman? (and before anyone asks, no I was not ok with that either)

I think we can safely say that the general audience isn't as racist as you believe them to be.
