Question *spoilers* ?

In the first 5 minutes I thought I had this film nailed, that they were all people that were dead their souls just kinda meeting up at this cabin before being called off to ?

I know there had to be some people that thought that. The one guy could have died in the car wreck, the lady whose car broke down could have froze to death & the younger blonde could have been killed in a robbery. It all made perfect sense, then the writers pulled a fast one, I certainly didn't put that together, I was amazed!

So what's your question? I don't get it.

reply

Maybe the question is if anyone else thought this..
Yes, that was pretty much my first thought.

reply

Yes, I figured they were all dead pretty early. And they are all dead, so we got that right.

I also figured something was up with the timeline when I saw Samantha's old car, but I didn't get the twist until much later. Good movie.

"And they are all dead, so we got that right"

Yea I guess they were all dead, as in a not being born yet way. I really liked this film, they took a very small budget and really fooled the viewer with a plot that I don't remember ever seeing before in the thousands of films floating around in my mental database. Too bad this thing will not see much sunlight, hopefully the writer of this can send this to producers & get a big time gig with some real $$$. Then again we all know some of the best work is done with a lot of volunteers & hardly any cash

No, they were dead in a DEAD way. Samantha died in childbirth in 1962. Daughter (don't remember name ATM) was executed for murder - executions of women are pretty rare, but whatever - in 1986. Son committed suicide in 2011. The fact that their bodies have somehow time-traveled back to the 1940s doesn't change their deadness in their own times.

So what do you make of the ending, where Jody and her mother are together at the beach? This seems to be an alternative life, where Jody turned out to be a good girl, not a criminal.

reply

Okay, I also thought they died just like the OP. Then it reminded me a lot of Satre's play "No Exit", I thought they were in a kind of hell being forced to spend eternity together. As the movie progressed and I found out there are not just from differnt locations but also from different times (although I already expected this) I got more and more convinced I was right.

I didn't see this time travel to save the ancestor twist coming, great movie with a lot of WTFF moments in a positive way.

I know that hit me like a brick to the head, I usually pride myself for figuring out everything early(and telling everyone else my theories ,not that they like it too much)

Also as Frisil mentioned about them being stuck in a sense of hell, no matter which way they go it just leads to the same spot. That sure would be a sense of hell!

Thanks..I will check it out.. 2011 The Caller
I'm always looking for little films that no one has heard of that are better than expected..

Isn't it amazing how many movies have the same names?

reply

Some names have been used over 20 times, so much for being original!

I agree The Caller was an excellent film that still baffles me... in fact I need to rent it again as some things still left me puzzled... same thing with The Machinist.... but THIS FILM seemed to employ a lot of elements from other more notable films, such as Identity, Back to the Future, and Terminator, at least IMO. So not too original, in a way. The only thing that really baffled me here was the ending... were the two women supposed to be in Heaven or something?

Yeah I thought they all had died as well and met in the afterlife. I was completely caught off guard by the twist and revelation later regarding them all being related.
