How did they all end up together in the past? The reason is clear, but what's the mechanism? Is it something to do with the clerk and the locked safe?
Also what happens to Tom in the alternate future?

Something with the clerk and his safe sent them there.
And Tom doesn't exist; since Jody wasn't with Kevin, he was never conceived. Side note: I thought it was kind of ironic that Tom was the one who figured out that Hans had to survive.. which ultimately erased Tom from existance.

Except who is to say that Kevin was actually Tom's father? Jody may have got with another guy soon after she killed Kevin. Or cheated on Kevin before she killed him. Who knows.
Seeing as Jody went into the shop at the same time as Kevin and the "replacement Jody" went in, to me that suggests that that is the exact day her life changed, when she "time travelled" back to the cabin.
I think it is completely possibly that she still conceived Tom as I think it is open to interpretation, as Kevin may never have been the true father.
Either way, amazing movie, two thumbs up.
If Kevin wasn't the father, the father is very likely someone Jody would meet due to her criminal deeds. With her keeping a clean nose, she wouldn't be in the circumstance to meet the father. I don't think Tom was ever conceived.
shareExactly. Even if Jody were to have a child, it wouldn't be Tom. That baby wouldn't be the child of criminals, wouldn't grow up as an orphan, and wouldn't ultimately kill another man and himself.

Just because Jody was a criminal doesn't mean that she only necessarily 'mated' with criminals, and doesn't mean that she couldn't have conceived by the same guy, in either life track.
Improbable perhaps, but not impossible.
As a thought experiment:
Jody 1 does her criminal thing & before she is caught, she is feeling down and sad, and meets some nice guy who tries to help her out, they end up 'together' and she ends up conceiving.
Jody 2 already knows the same nice guy, they date & she conceives.
Still could be 'Tom' biologically, but not Tom 1 in other ways, much as Jody and her Mom are the same...but aren't.
I don't know if the dates would match up though. Did Jody 1 have enough time to get pregnant by someone other than her hood bf before she got caught?
I would have to watch it a second time, I guess, and pay better attention.

I think the feelings of remorse we get for Tom are supposed to be quelled by the point when Tom is saying he has noone close to him who would care if he were to disappear. Just a possibility
