Anti-whaling propaganda?

I haven't seen it yet but a friend told me it has anti-whaling propaganda. Is there truth to this? I usually don't like preachy movies.

reply

Whales are okay man, don't be a retard.

reply

So are pigs but they're still tasty.

reply

Pigs are many, grow fast, and you can eat it all (except the squeal). Whales are few, grow slowly, and are mostly inedible.

reply

It takes like more than a thousand chickens to get the same meat as from a single whale. Why do you hate chickens?

Whales arent being overhunted as it is. Why should a country like Iceland which has always treated its resources respectfully be punished for the former mistakes of others?

reply

Hey I thought we were talking about pigs, not baby dinosaurs!
Anyway, you can grow chickens as they don't take up much space.

I am 100% for Icelanders hunting whales with the same technology they used to hunt whales 200 years ago, before they whored out to technology made by people with other interests.

reply

Really? Ever looked at how many we hunt compared to their total population? It's such a tiny fraction it would still be sustainable if we multiplied it. You talk as if we are using technology to hunt as many as we can which is not the case.

Personally I think hunting free animals is way better than factory farming which is basically torturing an animal it's entire life.

Killing large animals is also better than smaller ones because fewer conscious beings are sacrificed that way.

May I ask which country you're from?

reply

Factory farming is sustainable by definition. Hunting animals that take decades to develop and live as long as you (in the wild!) is another thing. Have some respect.
I'm from Europe.

reply

Unlike many other nations we Icelanders respect our natural resources. Which is why the number we hunt is so low it does not threaten the population.

reply

Then why did you become so agitated? You could have said "Yeah whales are ok I guess" or not take any whaling propaganda (if the movie were one...) directed at you. There are probably more maritime things that hurt whales than whaling.

reply

Personally I do agree with you about hunting. In my area of the U.S there is an overpopulation of deer and the only thing keeping the population down is humans hunting. Coyotes more often hunt other animals or get into peoples' garbage. The wolves are all gone except for a few states in the U.S.

I don't get these people who want an overpopulation of deer just because they think it's wrong for people to kill animals for meat. Then again I think people like that are kind of crazy anyway. There is nothing wrong with eating meat and dairy. You get more protein from meat and dairy than you do from vegetables and fruit. You should still eat vegetables and fruit but they do not have the protein dairy and meat have.

reply

How can you compare whales, which range from the size of your car to the size of a skyscraper, with deer?! And what's the deal with coyotes? Whales never had any natural predator (maybe except sharks, which are doing fine, thank you).
And in case you are immune to common sense, consider that there are 35 million deer in the United States while there are 1.5 million whales in the whole world... and as oceans take up 38x as much (or 3800% more) space as the United States... some whale species which take decades to reproduce have less than 50.000 exemplars left.

reply

Wow! Lighten up! I wasn't comparing the 2. I was mainly saying I agree hunting whales in small amounts is fine. What I was saying is that people need to hunt deer since there's an overpopulation of them all over the U.S. Sheesh! You get offended way too easily.

reply

Animal activist fragility.

reply

Paul Watson filmed a cameo as a Navi, I heard.

reply

Is there truth to this?

I certainly hope so.

Whales are an integral part of life on Earth. One example . . . (thumbnail sketch) . . . there are fewer than 350 North Atlantic right whales remaining, with only 70 females of reproductive age. These whales dive deep to feed on zooplankton, then return to the surface to breathe and in doing so release nutrients near the surface through their feces, which support the growth of phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are responsible for producing around half of the worlds oxygen.

We need the phytoplankton, especially since rain forests, or forests in general for that matter, are turning into parking lots.

I'm for protecting life on Earth, whales included, for love of diversity in wildlife and the wildlife itself. But even if you're not into that, we benefit from the life cycles in the ecosystem that have developed over many many years, and if a piece is removed, could cause the entire pyramid to collapse.

reply

They aren't being overhunted with the current very limited quotas. It's not a all or nothing type of thing.

reply

What does that have to do with the thread topic? Even granted that what you say is true (sources?).

Anti whaling messaging is a good thing. Assuming it even exists in the film. Does it bother you?

reply

Most species of whales are endangered. The last thing they need is people hunting them down.

reply

Kill some dumb space whales and become immortal? So long silly whale. I'm pro-human with both these movies so far. Their messaging is falling on deaf ears. Pandora is clearly a stepping stone set in place for our evolution and eventual total domination of the universe as we become new gods.
