I felt bad for Spider the entire movie

He was too good for the Sully family. He was so loyal to them and never betrayed them. Yet when Spider was taken, none of them tried to look for him and bring him back. All Jake said about it was that because the bad guys have him, he actually thought Spider was going to confess the family's whereabouts. And Neytiri almost killed Spider in revenge for Miles killing her son and yet Spider wasn't even mad at her for that. And when the younger son said to the older son they couldn't abandon Spider, the older brother rolled his eyes. Just treated it like nothing happened. He deserved a giant thank you from the family for the sacrifices he made for them. You would think Jake would have been very close to Spider knowing Spider's an example of a human willing to adapt.

I felt he was a terribly written character among other terribly written characters. Every time he hissed, I just laughed. Your points aren't unfair. I just think the script was bad and that James Cameron doesn't like human beings unless they scientists.

reply

To be fair, Jake did say from the beginning that Spider was more like a stray cat and Neytiri didn't like him. Plus, Jake knew that he wasn't in danger from the humans.

Not saying it's right, just that it isn't unexpected.

reply

Humans literally tortured him the moment they catch him )))

reply

Yeah I just wish that him and Jake bonded more considering Jake used to be human so he can relate being human in Pandora feeling like an outsider

All of your points are well taken. But one could point out this about Spiders "loyalty" -- he betrayed the Sully family by saving his "father" but not telling them about it. That only sets the family up for a future ambush, which could prove fatal to all or part of the family.

reply

He did this only because James Cameron is obsessed with keeping Stephen Lang main villain in this movies so someone had to rescue him somehow. So poor Spider was chosen for that ungrateful role. Stephen Lang is basically now like that black chick for Scary Movies franchise where she keep dying in every movie and then returns in the next one with no explanation )))

Thank you. I felt the same whole movie.

They did not care about him at all. It was hilarious when he was captured and Sully Family was like: "Oh well bad for you kid". Then packed their things and ran away, forgetting about his existence. That poor kid was with them his whole life. And they just dumped him like he was nothing.

I was thinking: "If that was one of the 3 kids of Jake and Neytiri then they would plan rescue mission immediately and never abandon her. And what was the forth child (Sigourney Weaver mini-me) I didndt even understand. She was adopted I assume? I feel like Sully Family would abandon her too. They only cared about their biological blood kids.

And then again when family reunited after big battle (minus older one) and it was voice over how they are all family and care for each other. And I was like: "Excuse me. Didnt you forget someone? Like Spider kid? You dont care at all that he is missing again? Like that kid just returned to save your kids. Have a little respect".

And then he showed up and everyone moved on. He truly was like a stray cat to them. And I feel like they would even love stray cat more and would worry about him. Only Sigourney Weaver mini-me cared about him as her friend.

Like imagine poor kid being captured and sitting there, being tortured and thinking that it okey, his family and friends are plotting his rescue. But in reality no one did and they forgot about his existence.

That was so harsh on him. No wonder he was interested in spending time with his daddy. As it looks like only daddy cared about him little when he didnt want him to be killed.

reply

Exactly. That's all I thought about the whole movie was that Spider is basically risking his life for this family and no one cares. It couldn't make me enjoy the feel-good scenes knowing they were enjoying their time while Spider was basically getting tortured.

The character was very poorly written and acting with conflicting motivations almost scene to scene.

It was more than obvious he was going to be threatened to get to Quaritch. It's also obvious that he will have some kind of betrayal/redemption arc likely ending with him setting an example for others.

Much like how the girl is going to be the living embodiment of Eywa

Much like how once we've met all the different tribes and had all the skirmishes in the last movie there will be another World Wide Eywa vs Humans fight only this time we will all learn to love each other and get along.
