The lack of chemistry is what kills it.

I think the new Top Gear just confirms what everyone feared; when there's no chemistry between the hosts, it's cringe-inducing to watch. They might have the challenges and the brilliant cinematography but we may as well be watching an episode of Top Gear USA because of how little interest I have in the hosts (although I think TGUSA's actually may have had more chemistry).

Chris Evans is trying too hard to be funny and entertaining but he just comes across as an uncool nerdy bloke. Matt LeBlanc is fine but whatever lines the writers are giving him sound fake, unfunny and not something an American would say. I mean, the overuse of scripting was one of the criticisms of old Top Gear, so it isn't going to be improved with the change of hosts.

Couldn't agree more. The show of friendship between the two of them was clearly forced.

Yes and chemistry takes time. So give it time. I think it's showing a lot of promise to be honest.

reply

For real. Might take three years. LeBlanc and Evans might become bros after doing this show for a few years. They both have big egos and love cars, I mean, they gotta get on sooner or later. What the show desperately needs is a third banana.

reply

Yeah, exactly. Some time and it'll get better. Adding in a regular 3rd presenter will help change the dynamics up and fill out the cast.

reply

Except I can't imagine Chris Evans having chemistry with anyone in the show's format. If they let him be himself, he'd insta-morph into a shouting frantic monkey on screen, how the hell do you generate chemistry with that?

reply

You really expect instant chemistry between some hosts who met a few months ago and have only just started filming the live shows? Really???? Search out some of the first series with clarkson and May and see the same lack of 'chemistry'.

Personally i miss the old top gear, with actual car reviews...they were good at car reviews.

It's not just the lack of chemistry. what the BBC have totally underestimated [especially that pc pratt who Clarkson said had it in for him] is that Top Gear had transformed into the Jeremy Clarkson show and it's been that way for at least 20 years [even though May and Hammond went perfectly with him and had strong personalities too]. people started watching the show precisely because of Clarkson as he's not only a brilliant presenter but he's funny too. And uniquely funny too. that's why there's such things as Clarksonisms

All Top Gear is now is not only a pale imitation of Clarksons show but it's trying too hard. it's just another car show now.

Agreed, Clarkson is the main thing people like to watch.

I think the mistake they have made with the new Top Gear is they stuck to the format that Clarkson and team developed over the years. They needed a new format to the car show, maybe even some proper car reviews again.

It does feel like they are trying to carry on where it left off and hope no one notices they have worse presenters now.

If it was a new format then the comparisons wouldn't be as bad. The 'chemistry' complaint is bogus as you dont get that straight away. If they have no chemistry after 2 or 3 seasons, then it is a valid complaint.

Wouldn't it be great if the ditched / edited out Chris Evans and made Matt Le Blanc the lead. I feel the segments done by Matt are worthy of praise and he's actually quite respectable as a top gear presenter. The less said about Chris Evans the better.

The one thing that gets me is his annoying voice and how every week he'll make a comment to let everyone know how rich he is.

Episode 1 - When Gordon Ramsay (wouldn't he make an awesome Top Gear host?) said he had taken delivery of his key for his La Ferrari, Evans HAD to chime in saying "oh when are you getting yours" - implying....

Episode 2 - The ANNOYING segment where he remarked that he now owns the Mclaren 675LT....

So he has the money, but that doesn't bring style and cool factor with it.... If the cool wall were still around, both these cars would now be in the HYPER UNCOOL sections (yes I know there wasn't one, they'd have to make a new section just for Chris Evans)

Don't you feel sorry for Matt Le Blanc....

even when chris evans did the star in a reasonable price car a few seasons ago he acted like he was the richest person in the world.

Er no .......he's just as bad as Evans. Evans is annoying but Le Blanc is bland and please no Gordon Ramsey.

couldnt disagree with both your statements more:

It's not only Clarkson people want to watch (not me at least), yes he's funny, yes he was the main star, but i think you underestimate the appreciation of the chemistry of the whole team.... If Clarkson would've presented it on his own, nobody would have watched

uniquely funny? sorry but no (funny nonetheless though)

What's more, Matt LeBlanc is ABSOLUTELY not as bad Chris Evans.
If anything, I think he is the only reason people gave this "revamped" version a shot. Over the years he has shown to be an incredibly charming guy... The only thing he's struggling with are the horrible lines the writers give him.

On a side note, the last (3rd) episode was a disaster: Chris Harris? Really? Stick to youtube please... Rory Reid? Where did he come from? switched the TV off when I saw him cross arms when cornering, didn't charm me in the 3mins prior to it as well.

as far as Sabine goes, I actually liked her, too bad her segment got utterly wrecked by Evans (screaming like a girl, and the ?fake throw-up?, hope so, if you already can't handle 2 laps on a circuit, what are you doing on a car show?), and I think the show would definitely benefit from casting her on a regular basis, as she's the only one currently on the show actually able to drive a car...

So yeah, keep LeBlanc and maybe give him more room to improvise, keep Sabine too and fire the rest...

Just my opinion though =)

P.S. apologies for any grammar/vocab mistakes, English is not my first language
