It's a trope, the loser archetype. The individual who watches the movie, identifies himself with the protagonist. It's a feedback. The audiences are plagued by immaturity, so the movies make the protagonist immature. The protagonist then walks a path of enlightenment, that will make him great. It's addictive, for the immature audiences.
Spiderman is a goofy kid who ends up saving the world.
Batman is a goofy kid who ends up saving the world.
Superman is a goofy kid who ends up saving the world.
Luke Skywalker is a goofy kid who ends up saving the world.
Frodo is a goofy little guy who ends up saving the world.
Forrest Gump is a goofy doo doo head who ends up saving the world.
Neo is a goofy poofy who ends up saving the matrix.
Charlie Chaplin is a goofy punk who ends up saving capitalism.
John Connor is a goofy kid who ends up saving the future.
Karate Kid is a goofy kid who ends up saving... whatever he saves
etc. etc.
Behind this loser trope, is ideology. You are being pounded with the false idea "if you really want something, you can achieve it, like Ironman". It follows that your life sucks not because you are being systematically exploited by the Establishment, but because you didn't really want to have a good life.
Ideology is a fascinating field, and I recommend you watch this dude Slavoj Zizek - A pervert guide to ideology, where he uses cinema to show you how ideology works.
