Was Jupiter Ascending the start of a trilogy?

I couldn't get through the movie, but was curious if it was supposed to be the first in a trilogy or series. I usually pride myself on being able to watch the unwatchable, but couldn't finish watching Jupiter Ascending. Oh it was bad...

There were initially plans for a trilogy, yes, though they obviously didn't come to anything.

I'm genuinely curious - what made the film so bad? Could you not engage with it? Was it too weird, too silly, too confusing? What exactly made it 'unwacthable'? I'm genuinely curious because I've loved it and found it extremely fun since my first viewing.

I'm not sure if the OP is a troll post. But comes to a forum, says it was bad and little else with no explanations given...

I hope that isn't the case, but it follows the how to troll 101 quite well.

I didn't mean to troll it. I was legitimately curious if Jupiter Ascending was a setup to a sequel, trilogy, or series, but given how unsuccessful it was, I doubt it gets a follow up unless it develops a serious cult following.

I couldn't get through the movie... to me, it was too hokey; mainly it was the villains that drove me away. It's often said that a movie is only as good as its antagonist. The effects were great, but that doesn't keep me involved. Great effects without good characterization ends up being distracting, at least in my case.

And I can see why some people like it, as I've read the reviews from all sides.

The OP's question was whether it was supposed to be a trilogy or not, not a rant at how much he hated it.

reply

Oh it was bad...
qualifies as a rant.

reply

I didn't realize you were the definitive authority on rant qualifications. The OP casually mentioned that he thought a movie was very bad while asking a question about it, he likely felt the need to share his opinion on it as justification for not finishing the movie. I've seen some pretty ridiculous rants on this website, this doesn't even come close.

reply

I don't think it was bad, it seems like the 'in thing to do' is to hate on the movie. I think anyone who has seen it should admit that the final 2 acts were like one was plot A and the other was plot B and instead of picking A or B they just kept both in the final cut.

I bet if it was successful, like the Matrix, then suddenly, "Oh, btw, this is a trilogy!"

I plan on watching the "whole" movie sometime.

Caught some of it on Cinemax, and was not surprised by the dialogue and costumes.

In the Matrix sequels, which I thought were ok, I put up with the dialogue and androgynous styling's because such a kick a$$ story was established.

Continued, unwarranted awkward dialogue for this new story, coupled with apparel that could land most of the actors in the Matrix universe - seemed forced.

I like all the actors that were cast for this movie too. But were they cast for the wrong parts? Sean Bean seemed good (as always!) however, everyone else's dialogue seemed contrived/as was the story.

I'm not totally condemning this film, I'll end up watching it all... someday. But for now, I'm not impressed (in fact, the only reason I bothered coming here is because I'm still holding a torch, sort of, for The Matrix.)

I hope it becomes a trilogy!

well, if it was, those plans are history--like Fantastic Four, which was so bad, they actually cancelled the sequel

This isn't great, but it's much better than Fant4stic.

There is actually still rumours of at least one follow-up. "Uranus resigning", will supposedly include a hologram of Frank Sinatra in many key scenes.

I wanted to like this because of Mila Kunis presence-but after 6 months-i can't remember a thing about the film

I just watched CLOUD ATLAS and was blown away

I assume so. Felt like a good 60 minutes was lacking. Either this movie was cut to shreds or they were planning to cover what happened to the other brother and sister, and the fallout of Lord Hawking's death and the destruction of the facility on Jupiter in the next movie.

the movie WAS a Trilogy all condensed into one movie!
