Why all the makeup criticism?

I watched this film recently expecting the makeup to be atrocious, and have to say that it looked great. I fully believed that Leo was Hoover (in no small part due to his acting ability as well).

Of course, makeup effects are like any sort of special effects - no matter how good they are, no matter how much time and effort is spent on them, you will always find someone online criticizing them.

The makeup for Hoover was fine,as was the makeup for Helen. The makeup for Tolson was horrible I thought. Part of it was frankly the actors performance. Too many actors overact when playing an elderly person, as was the case here. Also the makeup itself seemed unnatural, making him look almost like a burn victim. It would be easier to overlook such things if the movie itself had been more satisfying. However it wasn't one of Eastwood's best films. It could have been much better.

The only problem I had was with Armie Hammer's makeup which I found mildly distracting but the guy's performance is so strong, so touching, that it ultimately rose above such minor flaws. By contrast the makeup for DiCaprio was perfect. The moment DiCaprio appeared on the screen as the old J Edgar I completely believed it. Frankly I'm sick to death of hearing these blowhards go on about the 'horrible' ageing work. If they're suggesting they couldn't get into this superb story or the characters because of one mildly unsatisfactory makeup job then I'd say they're idiots who don't deserve to be taken seriously.

I thought the makeup was fantastic - one of the film's strong points. In particular Naomi Watts looked flawless.

Naomi Watts was good... everyone else looked rubbery.

My immediate reaction when I saw Leo was holy crap, that's the most convincing old age makeup I've ever seen. It totally looked like an old Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role. Some of the others weren't quite as incredibly convincing, but I wouldn't say they were anywhere near not good.

If I were to nitpick I'd say DiCaprio's voice broke the illusion a little bit; it didn't sound aged at all. But of course such a thing wouldn't take away from my enjoyment of the film.

The ageing makeup looked odd. It actually detracted the viewer.

Anyone else think Tolson's makeup looked a little like Karloff's Mummy?

Hoover's wasn't all that bad. But the makeup for Tolson was terrible.
