Gay marriage in Washington DC in the 1950s.

All this debate about marriage equality while Hoover and Tolson were doing it 50 years ago. Cary Grant and Randolph Scott lived together till they did that spread in a magazine and gave some insight into what marriage equality looks like.
Everything Hoover did was about protecting the sham of a facade that he created and hiding his marriage with Clyde Tolson from the world.
I don't know if people have gotten smarter or they've just got the internet.

No, just that we as humans are always pushing the boundaries and moving the line of what is socially acceptable. In the future people will be allowed to legally marry animals etc.

I think people at the bureau...etc pretty much knew they were a couple. It's just that they could not be open who they really were. Perhaps if they could Hoover especially would have been much happier nicer towards others. He would not have wanted to go after other's personal lives. He and tolson might have instead balanced out a family and then retired.
