I would rather have a dead son than a daffodil for a son.

Did anyone else find that scene hilarious? Especially the dialogue about the Easter bonnet and the hooped skirt?

You can 'elp me gather some Hollyhocks!

The intent behind it was homophobic and evil.

The intent behind it was to show Hoover's mother as homophobic, and to explain why he never had the guts to embrace his own tendencies. And no, I didn't find it hilarious at all. All I thought was, that poor kid.
I'd be interested to know the story behind that too.

reply

You're alone buddy, it was supremely cheesy and cliche'd. If Mrs. Hoover legitimately said this, she is responsible for the birth of a very tired and worn out trope, individually sufficient to corrupt any progressing storyline concerning gay issues.

reply

He's not alone. Do not speak for everybody. I didn't find anything hilarious in it either.

"You and him are alone." -no your quite wrong I agree with them...I'm sure countless others do as well...don't get me wrong I understand the campiness of it all...but ultimately it was more sad than anything...

I'm with you. It wasn't a 'hilarious' scene, it was sad. I thought it also hinted at the idea that she knew about her son and was letting him know that it was not acceptable.

What proof is there that his mother was like that? It almost seems to place the entire blame on the mother for JEH trying to deny or hide his homosexuality. However, at the time, there were plenty of societal and political motivations for him to do so. One strong reason for him to hide it is he used homosexuality to blackmail and discredit his enemies.

So, without any real proof about his mother's hatred of "daffy", that scene was pure camp intended to help us muster some sympathy for a reviled figure. Well, it didn't work for me, I laughed when watching that scene.

Okay, so why assume others wouldn't consider that just like you did? Obviously a lot of us (dare I say most) are aware of these motivations, so why suggest that the film wants to put all the blame on the mother? Having said that, the film was poorly written imho, a lot could have been included to give more insight into Hoover's actions and state of mind, or at least try to explain them better, but still, one - in fairness very typical and perfectly likely (things haven't changed that much) - remark shouldn't make us assume that Mother is the only one responsible. Plenty of us know better than that. And those who don't wouldn't get any other hint anyway.

When I saw it, the entire audience gasped at his mother's cruelty.

If you don't know what they're saying, turn on the subtitles.

if Hoover had had the guts to stand up to society's homophobia like the rest of us, he would not be a panty waist!!!!

Don't forget that those were radically different times, mhearn. Homosexuality was a crime then. The "Sodomy laws" in the US weren't repealed until 1962, and in some states it even took until 2003.

What no film has adressed is his ambivlence. in the 1940's he was superman, now he is a effeminate facist. I was pleasently suprised to hear despite his dislike for Dr King, he had a personaL friendship with Thurgood Marshall, source Juan Willams autobiography and reguarded Whitney Young as the Finest statesman in America 1964 Message to law enforcement.

My audience mostly chuckled, I guess due to the camp our pal mhearn referred to up above. (Leicester Square CineWorld in London)

when i saw it there were quite a lot of gasps aswell. I thought it was a brilliant scene very powerfull and almost heart breaking brought a tear to my eye. and i am so glad i never had any laughs as i'd have probably got up walked over to them and punched them in the face.

Darling, you do realize that the audience wasn't actually seeing it happen in reality. Also, you do know that we don't even know this actually happened in any way. The mother on screen was a caricature of a bad mother. We don't know if she was anywhere this extreme in real life.

reply

After you got done crying. :-)

reply

It certainly made "coming out" to his mom a remote option, to say the least.

I thought it was terrible. I died a little inside.
Also, overall terrible film. I don't know what I was outraged the most about: these hateful lines, or how awful the movie was.

Don't blame them. What gives you the right to inflict profane noise pollution during a movie? Because your sensitivies were offended by a character? You should widen your movie repertoire, honeypie.

Are you sure the mother meant something about homosexuality with that comment, or just about the whole cross-dressing thing that Hoover was rumored to be into?

She specifically mentioned the kid dressing up in woman's clothing, and as enlightened people know, that is not a sign of homosexuality.

This movie is so bad its BAD, but also so bad its funny.

His mother didn't seem very enlightened to me. She probably didn't know and didn't care about the distinctions.

The mother, Honey, was a fictional character in a movie.

Seriously, are you doing this just to get a rise out of people or are you that dense? You are what is wrong with America. We won't tolerate you. Nobody here is your darling, your honey, or anything else. Homophobia is here to stay!

No, it was not hilarious. How dare you? So many of us find it so hard to admit to who we are. People like you make it that much more difficult. I would hope that you not be a parent to someone who is gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. What a tragedy that would be. You have no heart. You have no sensitivity.

reply

Wow. You know you're making judgements about a real person based on a fictional character in a movie right?

reply

You are so narrow minded and you did not even watch this movie properly. The character of Hoover did explain and mention at the beginning of the film while talking about the events surrounding Palmer about the typical mistake of judging past events from a present perspective, forgetting context. That's the whole reason to learn about history. Dooh.

I'm not sure how narrowmindedness comes into it!

If it is true that she said that...it is a reflection of the way people thought at the time. Heck even today people still say those kinds of things for one reason or the other i.e. religious views, ignorance, fear...etc. It is wrong no matter what reason.

Yup. Though most of us grownups value tolerance and can disagree without becoming disagreeable, other sorts cherish hateful hearts.

Foe example mediocre actor Michael Shannon said he'd disown his parents and they'd be better off in an urn if they dared vote for Donald Trump.
😂

http://www.vulture.com/2016/11/michael-shannon-is-on-an-anti-trump-rage-tour.html

After suggesting that a civil war would be the only way to prevent Trump from assuming the highest office in the land, Shannon asserts that if you feel okay about supporting his presidency, it’s probably time for you to just die already. “There’s a lot of old people who need to realize they’ve had a nice life, and it’s time for them to move on,” Shannon said. “Because they’re the ones who go out and vote for these *beep* If you look at the young people, between 18 and 25, if it was up to them, Hillary would have been president. No offense to the seniors out there. My mom’s a senior citizen. But if you’re voting for Trump, it’s time for the urn.” And if your parents voted for Trump? “*beep* ’em. You’re an orphan now. Don’t go home. Don’t go home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Don’t talk to them at all. Silence speaks volumes.”
