It's an intentionally subversive ending #spoilers


Stone is mocking the Romanticism and idealism of the protagonists. I find it highly ironic how many people hate the ending, but love the rest of it. The joke is on you.

Intriguing, but if that was his intent, its execution was bad direction.
Because rather than making me laugh at the protagonists, I felt insulted as a viewer. The viewer isn't in on the joke, we're on the outside getting the carpet ripped from under us.

I think the viewer is meant to chuckle at the narration and naive nature of the protagonists throughout the film. The rug is only ripped from under the viewer that coos along with the three main dingbats.
