Ruined everything good about the book
The book itself was very good, as far as historical fiction, or more accurately, historical fantasy, goes. It told this fictional story through the lens of history for the most part. It worked around what we knew as bona fide facts and acknowledged them, while adding the fantasy element. This movie was kind of entertaining in its own right, but nowhere near as good as the book. It is surprising how much the film differed from the book, given that the author and screenwriter are one and the same. I'm sure this is old hat for the board; I'm just a fan of the book who finally got around to seeing the movie.
