What the hell was that hat made out of that it could support that weight without collapsing?

Being that his hat is part of Lincoln Folklore it might be a sort of metaphor of the hats status as a symbol of Lincoln.

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!

I think it implies two things.
First, she steps on the hat without even considering if it could support her. She is a little naive.
Secondly, I think it means that Lincoln always wore this hat because it was part of his battlearmor. He was never without protection. (The book goes into detail about his customized coat.)
