I just watched this again on cable and loved it as much as the first time I saw it. The one thing that bothers me is, did the detective following Gil escape Versailles? Did he find his way back to the 21st Century? Or was he executed by order of the king?
I wonder that too. I thought the ending was very funny, but I do hope the detective doesn't get stuck in versailles - unless of course he decided he wanted to atay of course, like the girl wanted to in the 1890s. perhaps he might become a bodyguard to the king or something. i don't think he would be executed just for being in the palace .
I think that short sequence was inserted simply as a joke but I was nevertheless bemused as to how the detective managed to get to pre-revolutionary Versailles. Gil did visit there but in the present (2010) day so how the 'tec got there long before the twenties, which was Gil's time limit, is anybody's guess.
The detective's job was to watch Gil to see what he did at night. So when he saw Gil getting into a 1920s car, it would be natural for him to take the next vehicle to follow him. I guess what happened was that he got into a horse-drawn carriage and ended up in Louis XIV's palace.
No, Gil, always got rides, he was given a ride in a 1920s car and 19t century carriage to go to the next location. The Detective was driving his own car and thus probably took a wrong turn.
