Daniel Johnston *SPOILER ALERT*

Anyone see shades of Johnston in Frank's character? Especially near the end when he has his mask off?

Not just Johnston though. Frank felt like an amalgamation of several outsider characters in music.. including Mark E. Smith, Captain Beefheart etc.

I felt the Beefheart in the beginning and the Johnston influence at the end. I was so touched my the "I love you all" performance.

Fassbender has mentioned that Daniel Johnston was an influence in several interviews.

Saw a bit of Roky Erickson when he was messing with the radio static at parents' house at end. Recording was Beefheart-like in that he was very exacting.

I need to investigate Johnston. He is a big gap in my music education

There's a 2005 documentary called "The Devil and Daniel Johnston." It is very sad; makes clear the extent to which he was hampered by mental illness.

I was def thinking of D. Johnson. This movie made me want to see that documentary again.

Great doc on Daniel for sure. I would add Wild Man Fischer (Derailroaded) in for similarity as well.
