what the hell is this?

It really is the death of movies when you see things like this! Who in their right mind would want to see this? It looks terrible!

These haters are retarded, Fassbender is a great actor with a very low amount of flops.

Fish Tank. Angel. Jonah Hex. Dangerous Method. Counselor. Haywire.

12YAS was a flop if Fox would have allowed it to fail. That is, if it would have tracked NORMAL distribution. It didn't even break even in America in a normal film cycle. They had to keep it in the press and theaters in two runs, then put all their Oscar campaign resources into it and advertise this American regional film in every CORNER of the globe to make it a financial success.

Best Man's Holiday (BMH) made more in its opening weekend than 12YAS in two months. It took BMH one weekend to break even.(double its budget est). It took 12YAS a full 3 months and 're-opening of the movie. With a literal flooding of advertising for it. If 12YAS was *allowed* to flop like other films, that is, do a normal 6-8 week run, it would have been a flop. Anything can make money if you push it hard enough and keep it around long enough, and keep telling everyone through dedicated PR campaigns that THIS is the film to see. It worked obviously. But, they can't do that with every film. It would not be cost effective.

lol I consider myself reasonably intelligent and I have seen this more than once and loved it.

So, everyone has to take your word that 1. You're smart and 2. The movie is good? A dumb idea.

To tell the whole truth, I prefer one hundred times more the judgement of a person who saw the movie he/she IS talking about to the words of one who talks and talks and talks of something he/she didn't see.

reply

No you don't. You prefer to wrap your ENTIRE existence on Earth around worshipping Michael Fassbender. You mold your undefined character and belief system to follow what you think would mirror what he would approve of. Not once have I ever seen you vary even an ounce into something that.differs from mirroring a mindset of worshipping him. It's bizarre.

You call me an ugly person? Coming from you, I find that to be comforting. I would be worried if we agreed on anything. Or if we understood each other quite frankly.

You're so right , my ENTIRE life turns around Fassbender! But isn't it weird that it's you the one who writes endless pages about him and his movies? Differently from you I give judgements after watching what he does. And I didn't see Jonah Hex, Blood Creek and Haywire because I was not interested. You call Fish Tank and A dangerous method - that you surely had not seen - a flop because you only consider movies from the money they earn. And please, spare me another ten-page-long report about costs and taxes and so on. But don't mind me anyway, I'm just another "idiot ass**** zombie fan", after all.

reply

I agree, it wasn't remotely funny as a comedy sketch and can't see it being funny now.
I would rather the film industry just donated the money to charity with a note attached saying "we were going to make a movie about a man with a papier mâché head, but decided to credit movie goers with more intelligence and taste so we donate this money to do good".....no wonder I hardly go to the cinema any more...

reply

What do you mean "[Hollywood] donate[] the money to charity"? While I agree with your sentiment, it is unfortunately, worse than you can imagine. And sadly and unfairly so.

This movie was made with New Mexico taxpayer money. I'd like someone to show me where Hollywood footed the bill for this nonsense. This was a taxpayer funded movie from what I understand. It's there on the New Mexico Film Commission website and articles address the shooting location was chosen due to generous tax grants.

That's how movies are made nowadays. Through generous taxpayers who fund films through tax grants (funded by public treasuries) and then through paying a second and third time (movie tickets then DVD sales)., Fassbender said it was made for around $5,000,000. But I'm not sure how much of that was paid for by New Mexico Refundable Film Tax credits. I have a separate thread about it. That amount is not such a large amount that it is inconceivable that ALL or the bulk of the film production cost could have been paid by FREE grants on the labor and backs of New Mexico taxpayers. With filler by other locations'grant programs. Who knows how much British and Irish taxpayers kicked in to cover the rest of the bill.

But, what is so pathetic and heartbreaking, is that this film was made in 2013, the same year the Governor of New Mexico pulled the plug on funding to mental health facilities in the state, and audited the facilities. Which sent the states's mental health framework into CHAOS. I read it displaced 300,000 citizens of New Mexico who suffer from mental illness who had to go elsewhere. And it prompted mental health workers to take to the streets in protest.

And Fassbender has the audacity (as well as the producers/writers etc of this film) to go around saying this movie is a comedy which tragically teaches about "mental illness?"

While star struck New Mexico Legislators choose to give FREE taxpayer money to Hollywood millionaires so they can don paper mache heads to make fun of mental illness under the guise of teaching a valuable social lesson on this sad disease, the Governor cuts funds to citizens who are actually licensed and educated to help people and then burdens them with a witch hunt audit.

I read recently, the New Mexico Attorney General just cleared the first mental health facility of wrongdoing. After the damage was long since done. And Iowa stopped its Hollywood corporate welfare program after a study showed fraud and/or 80% of awards were improperly distributed to filmmakers under the program. Where's New Mexico's emergency Film Tax Credit audit? Unbelievable....

So, yes, while I agree with your sentiment, it is unfortunately, worse than you can imagine. And sadly and unfairly so.

In-rainbows, Lena hasn't seen this movie and the others she talks about as well. But the important for her is to come here and say the worst she can about Michael, McQueen, his PR and all the people he
works with. And what about Macbeth, Lena? Ah, that Shakespeare, what an awful screen player!!!

[deleted]

Uh, FRANK sucked up taxpayer money from New Mexico but it's not playing in New Mexico and no where near my very large town in a major state in America. But it's playing in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Israel, Bosnia,Herzegovina and Japan.

Yeah, I pay tons of taxes in my state because my state legislators are star struck and intent on bankrupting my state to the detriment of important programs for ACTUAL CITIZENS of my state, so guys like Fassbender, Clooney, Pitt, Spielberg, McQueen, Weinstein, Jackson, et al can do a quick fly by into my state to pick up FREE cash, then leave, without bringing economic benefit to my state where my neighbors, friends and family suffer....

Ordinary folks living paycheck to paycheck so greedy foreign Hollywood millionaires can get richer in the LEAST worthwhile cause there is on the planet,.....entertainment. It's not energy. It's not farming. It's not healthcare. It's not bridge repair. It's not computer technology. Or science. Or cancer research. Or defense. It's friggin' entertainment....

And it is NOT worth taking $400,000 from the Michigan state workers pension fund to cover the producers of Oz reneging on their bond. Or denial of a $9 million funding request to courts in New York so the court, judges, parties, and litigants can be safe in court (right after someone opened fire on people in court) while Governor Cuomo who received $219,000 in campaign contributions from Hollywood, that same year increased the Hollywood grant from covering 10% of film/tv production costs to 30% of film/tv production costs. And it's not worth 300,000 mentally ill patients dumped by New Mexico because the Governor of that state cut funding to mental health in 2013, the same year FRANK filmmakers got FREE no strings attached money from New Mexico to make the movie FRANK which Fassbender is now trying to sell to the masses as some sort of education or public service announcement on mental illness.

Yeah, I'd prefer the New Mexico money go to licensed mental health workers to address community mental health than Fassbender, a bartender from County Killarney, Ireland. I can imagine you would prefer Michael get the money to teach the masses instead...just like he spread the social awareness gospel of sexual addiction in Shame.

Macbeth was brought up. I'm not a fan of Shakespeare. I wasted ENOUGH time on it in high school. That was two schools before law school. I got past it. Not interested in a Fassbender lesson. Just like I feel no burning desire to be taught about slavery, mental illness, or sex addiction by a guy with high school diploma. Sawwwwwwwreeeee. Excuse me, my phone is ringing...

LOL.....

Differently from you, Fassbender doesn't give any lesson (though he could, everybody can, no matter which the level of their education is, your sentence in this regard is despicable). Anyway, he doesn't give lessons, he Is an actor and he acts, very, very, very well. We all understood you don't like him at all. What I don't understand IS what you are doing in every - EVERY - board concerning him.

reply

[deleted]

Your statement is stupid. He could not educate me on how to perform brain surgery any more than he can educate the masses on mental health in a more skilled fashion than licensed mental health workers. But, it's not surprising that you are okay with 300,000 mental health patients in New Mexico abandoned (where this film was shot) and hundreds of ordinary citizens (New Mexico mental health workers) shut out of jobs so star struck New Mexico legislators (that same year, 2013?) could prioritize funding in favor of Michael, Ronson, Abramson and crew to give Fassbender a platform to try to make a point and educate about mental health in New Mexico.

With FREE corporate film grants to film makers (free money....no need to pay back...no audits...here's millions of dollars... go make a dramedy to teach the world in a bizarre fashion about mental illness while we cut off funding to our mental health programs, audit our facilities, finding no wrongdoing, and displace our disabled state citizens in need). It figures.

I would ask you what YOU seek to accomplish by molding your existence to support everything this person does, but I simply don't care about you or why you do things. You are so far gone into celebrity worship idolatry zombie land, I think you are a lost cause.

You've been following me around IMDB for several days now. Latched on to me like a sucker fish or a leech. Is it possible that your angst on behalf of your idol is reaching fever pitch? I mean seriously. You can wonder all you want why I do this. But, the bottom line is....IT'S....NONE.... OF....YOUR.... DAM/N....BUSINESS.... I owe NOTHING to you....just because you feel close (in your irrational fantasies ONLY) to this PUBLIC FIGURE, does NOT mean, folks owe a DUTY to you..

I mean.... like I said, your nasty name calling towards me as well as your aggressive obsession with me and desire to PROTECT and shield Fassbender from psychic harm (as I'm confident he doesn't read my posts or yours) is weird. But, like I said before, if there was any indication that we agree on things, or that I understood you, given how much of a jelly spined ill defined lacking in any character of your OWN human you are, that would worry me the most.

Hey iretos! What's the MOST humorous is that Fassbender claims to abhor ANY FORM of CENSORSHIP....He would be sooooooooooooo disappointed in his zombies trying to censor my opposition and criticism of him.....

Lena.

"Nasty name calling" .... Did you read what you just wrote about me? Or go back and find the insulting words you use for all the people on these boards or for various actors, directors, pr and so on. You, sweet angel of orphaned kittens. As long as you behave like this I will feel free to reply in the same way. And this will be none of your business.

reply

Do what you want Iretos. You have FREE speech and FREE will. As do we all my dear. . But, DA/MN, you seem so bitter and angry about my fostering and rescuing cats and kittens from death row at the pound. I have 8 right now, 2 at the adoption center. Hopefully they will get forever homes this weekend. I've rescued and adopted out over 660 now.

Your calling me an angel for doing that is meant to be IRONIC. But don't forget I also do dependency cases, that is CHINS, children in need of services cases. Helping children who are victims of child abuse, neglect, abandonment, parental kidnapping, molestation. Animal rescue is just a hobby. The other is professional calling. But, remember when you and the other McQueen/Fassbender worshipping zombies called me racist even though I bet I'm the only one out of all of us who has ever tried for a plaintiff a Title VII race discrimination jury trial in federal court.

It's amazing the perspective that celebrity worshipping zombies like yourself take. Worshipping narcissistic, egomaniacs who have no history of charity publicly, who support openly drug use, prostitution, atheism, promiscuity, leeching off of hard working taxpayers. While calling folks like me ugly. I went to the Fassbender board, McQueen board, and all these other boards initially criticizing THEM. I NEVER went to any of the boards to pick on posters. It's always celebrity worshipping posters like yourself that START with the insults, put downs, name calling ON BEHALF of the celebrity directed at me (as if they actually appreciate or even keep abreast of the in vain efforts of the zombie fans to look out for them....which is the most hilarious thing of all....)

You even just admitted it. Fame pulls public criticism. These idiot directors and actors that you are trying to protect from little ole me spew hatred for God, Christians, conservatives, white people, women, old people, mentally ill people, America, monogamy, traditional male/female love/loyalty and respect, etc in their American taxpayer funded films and unrestricted access to the media without sanction, limit, restrictions or regret. Yet, you are sooooooooooooooooo angry at one mere person fighting back with mere words in a very small and limited corner of the universe.

You are dumb as a box of rocks. But your mind is empty as a can of air cause you don't get the concept of equal access to message and opinion.

You know....I have to watch it for myself before I pass final judgement, but...

When it comes to movies I think I'll like, my "gut" usually doesn't lie. And everything I've seen to this point tells me that this "steaming pile of crap" will "bore the s--- out of me!"

That doesn't mean other people won't like it, just me.

In all my life, I've only been "terribly wrong" in my gut about ONE movie. Elf (2003).

I expected to hate the s--- out of that movie, but I loved it! Maybe Frank will be the second, but statistically, that's unlikely.

I saw the Fassbender interview on Colbert, and saw his "band's" performance. All I could think was "What the f--- is this s---?"

reply

I saw it last night, and I thought that it was wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

I'm developing an aneurism reading Lena's writing. I don't know what her psychopathic obsessive hatred with Michael Fassbender and Steve McQueen is, something I've noticed since "12 Years a Slave", but seriously, she needs to get the hell off her high horse. There's a difference between being indignant over how the world's functioning for the worst and digging to China to find any minute reason to hate an actor.

As for what "Frank" is, it's a shame you're not giving it a chance. What starts as a very surreal comedy transforms into a very dark and heartfelt study of what madness consumes us all in our given talents for better and, in Frank's case, for worse.

reply

A terrific response. Patrick. The little bit that I have seen from Miss Lena presents the most acute case of pointless stridency that I have found here.

Also enjoyed your "review in a sentence". I just watched Frank tonight, and was fascinated and a bit moved. An entertaining and compelling study of human nature.
