Don *SPOILERS*
So I was wondering why Don committed suicide, he seemed pretty happy to me. Also why did he do with it the Frank head? Was it because he idolized him?
shareAside from any depression, he was probably disappointed that he would never have Frank's talent.

Watch the film again, and pay extra close to Don throughout the film...you can almost see how he unravels through the movie. The scene directly before it when the camera zooms in on Don, you can almost watch his thought process.
Don has got to me my favorite character in the movie. Most of the scenes I can pick out are accented with him.
"I just took a sh!t"
or when the music turns up during the recording of the album
"Yeaaaaaaah!"
He also talks about how he got out of the mental hospital.
